Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Greek mythology, Nyx has only one parent - and not a normal one. She came from Chaos - what (or who) is "Chaos"?

Answer: An empty state that existed before the universe's creation

Chaos features in many Greek creation myths - it is quite hard to classify it as anything but was supposedly a state of nothingness preceding the cosmos. It had two children: Erebus and Nyx, although how it could have children (especially without a second being involved is a mystery.
2. Nyx gave birth to several children, some of them more important and influential in mythology than her. One of these children was Morpheus - appropriately (considering Nyx was the Goddess of Night), what was Morpheus the god of?

Answer: Dreams

The personification of darkness was Erebus. There is no god for pajamas or comas, surprisingly enough.

In myths, Morpheus often takes human form and appears in dreams. He gave his name to the drug morphine and inspired a character from "The Matrix" (the person who offers Neo the famous red pill/blue pill choice).
3. Another one of Nyx's children was Charon. Charon (not to be confused with Chiron) worked for Hades, performing which of these jobs?

Answer: Ferrying dead souls across the river Styx to the underworld

Charon took the recently deceased across the river Styx and over to the underworld. He required payment, which lead to the Greek ritual of placing a coin ("Charon's obol") in the mouth of a corpse before burying it.
4. Nyx had plenty of other children - which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Kronos (the Titan leader)

Nyx was also mother to Nemesis (the Goddess of Revenge), Thanatos (Death) and plenty of other deities. Some of these children have no father, while others have Erebus as a father.
5. Nyx was a very powerful goddess. In one myth, Zeus was angry at one of Nyx's sons (he put Zeus to sleep on Hera's orders). The son fled to Nyx and Zeus, the king of the gods, respected Nyx so much that he left the son alone. Who was this son of Nyx?

Answer: Hypnos

Hypnos was God of Sleep, and put Zeus to sleep so Hera could punish Herakles (Hercules) without him interfering. After Zeus found out Hypnos was involved, he got angry and chased him, but once Hypnos was with Nyx, Zeus feared Nyx enough to leave Hypnos alone.

In almost every myth featuring Nyx, she is very strong and has a lot of power. She was one of the first beings in existence, and predates even the oldest Titans.
6. Nyx's home was in Tartarus - a deep, dark abyss. Where is Tartarus?

Answer: In the underworld

Tartarus is an abyss often used to imprison immortals - Kronos and many other Titans were banished to Tartarus after being defeated by the Olympians.
7. Nyx had a statue at one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Which one?

Answer: The Temple of Artemis

The Statue of Zeus is, like the name suggests, a statue of Zeus located in Olympia. The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of Helios (the Titan God of Sun) and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon have little to do with the Greeks.

The Temple of Artemis was a temple at Ephesus. It was rebuilt twice and the third version of the temple had an image of Nyx made by the sculptor Rhoecus.
8. Nyx features in several poems where she, instead of Chaos, is the first principle and even more important than in other myths. Who are these poems attributed to?

Answer: Orpheus

In these poems, Nyx shares a cave with Kronos (who is chained up). Outside, Adrasteia beats a tympanon and clashes a cymbal in the rhythm of Nyx chanting, and the entire universe moves in time with them.
9. Many gods and goddesses have astronomical features named after them, and Nyx is no exception. "Nyx Mons" is the name of a mountain peak on a planet. Which planet? (Hint: this planet was named after the Roman counterpart of Aphrodite, goddess of love.)

Answer: Venus

The Nyx Mons is 875 kilometers in diameter. It was officially named in honour of the Goddess of Night in 1997.
10. Nyx also gets a moon named after her (it was called "Nix" to avoid confusion with an asteroid). This moon was only discovered in 2005, back when the object it orbits was considered to be a planet. It is now classified as a dwarf planet, and shares its name with the god who owned Nyx's home (Tartarus) after Hades did. Which dwarf planet is this?

Answer: Pluto

Nix was discovered in June 2005, and is alternatively named Pluto II. It orbits in the same pattern as Charon (Nyx's son in mythology), and takes 24.9 Earth days to make a full revolution around Pluto.
