Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Sir John Rivers

All the others are aliases for Robert Tremaine in "The Masqueraders". He is proved Viscount Barham by the end of the book. Mr Colney was his name during the Jacobite rebellion and Prudence says at one point 'We've seen you as Mr Colney; we've seen you as Mr Daughtry; we've even seen you as the Prince Vanilov.'
2. "An Infamous Army" features characters from three other Heyer novels. Which novel is the odd one out?

Answer: A Civil Contract

The Marquis of Vidal and his wife appear towards the end of "An Infamous Army", though Vidal's father has died, making them now the Duke and Duchess of Avon. From "Regency Buck", we are reunited with Lord and Lady Worth and Lord Worth's brother, Charles. Harry Smith and Johnny Kincaid from "The Spanish Bride" make fleeting appearances on the battlefield.
3. What were the names of Adam Deveril's dead brother and sister, frequently referred to as model children by his mother?

Answer: Stephen and Maria

From "A Civil Contract": Lydia, speaking to her brother Adam, calls Maria 'the most odious child.' Adam protests that his mother never said such a thing and Lydia agrees, 'No, exactly the reverse! She says Maria was too good for this world, so you see what I mean, don't you?'
4. 'Since there's no help, come let us kiss, and part!... Nay, I have done: you get no more of me.' Which character quotes the first line of this sonnet to an eponymous Heyer heroine?

Answer: Lord Damerel

This couplet comes from a beautiful sonnet by Michael Drayton,'Love's Farewell'. Damerel quotes the first line to Venetia, when he is forced to send her away from him. She recalls the second line as he sees her out of his house.
5. Which of the following is not a name of a Heyer heroine?

Answer: Cordelia

Hero Wantage, of course, is "Friday's Child". Frederica is the heroine of the novel named for her. Ancilla Trent marries "The Nonesuch". Cordelia is the heroine (to my mind) of "King Lear"!
6. Why does the Duchess of Salford suggest her friend Verena married Lord Marlow?

Answer: for his horsemanship

The only redeeming feature in the weak-willed, imprudent character of Lord Marlow (in "Sylvester") is his horsemanship. When his daughter runs away from home, his scolding letter concerns not her escape but her having done so 'without first telling him where she kept the key to the chest containing the horse-medicines.'
7. What is the relationship between the wealthy Mr Penicuik and the men he invites to offer for his ward's hand?

Answer: Great-nephews

Mr Penicuik ("Cotillion") did not marry until the end of the novel and certainly had no children. Freddy, Dolph, Hugh and Jack were all great-nephews of Mr Penicuik. He plans that the handsome, dashing Jack will marry Kitty so that he can leave his money to the greatnephew he likes best. Jack refuses to take the bait, planning to marry Kitty when he chooses. Both are stunned when Freddy's offer is accepted.
8. Who is "The Corinthian"?

Answer: Sir Richard Wyndham

Sir Richard, of course! Sir Waldo is "The Nonesuch"; Charles Rivenhall is the cousin of "The Grand Sophy"; Sir Tristram features in "The Talisman Ring".
9. What does Horatia Winwood feel obliged to draw her future husband's attention to before they become engaged?

Answer: Her stammer

When making "The Convenient Marriage", Horatia asked Rule if he felt he could become accustomed to her stammer. He responded gently that he likes it. Horatia considers her redeeming feature to be the Winwood nose.
10. In which French town does the action of "Devil's Cub" conclude?

Answer: Pont-de-Moine

Mary and Dominic travel together through Calais to Paris. She leaves for Dijon with Mr Comyn where she is pursued by Dominic and Juliana. At Dijon she learns that Dominic loves her but overhears his mother telling him she could not bear it if he married Mary. Mary decides to run away again and has only enough money to reach Pont-de-Moine.

There, she discovers the Duke of Avon, becomes betrothed to the Marquis and is joined the following day by the now-reconciled Frederick and Juliana, the Duchess of Avon and Lord Rupert Alastair.

The novel ends with a toast to Dijon!
