Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Lady Susan's surname?

Answer: Vernon

Lady Susan was recently widowed.
2. Which one of these words does not describe Lady Susan?

Answer: Rich

Lady Susan is very beautiful, clever and selfish, but she does not have much money. At the start of the book she comes to visit her brother-in-law and his wife because she has completely upset the Manwaring household where she had been staying following the death of her husband.
3. What is the first name of Lady Susan's daughter?

Answer: Frederica

Her full name is Frederica Susanna Vernon. She is 16 years old and neglected by her vain, selfish mother.
4. What is the name of the Vernon's Estate?

Answer: Churchill

Most of the action is set at Churchill. Parklands is the De Courcy estate, Langford is the Manwaring's, and Hartfield is from "Emma".
5. Who does Lady Susan want her daughter to marry?

Answer: Sir James Martin

Sir James is very rich but very silly. Frederica cannot stand him.
6. Who is Lady Susan's confidant?

Answer: Alicia Johnson

It is in her letters to Alicia Johnson that we learn what Lady Susan is really like.
7. Who does Frederica Vernon fall in love with?

Answer: Reginald De Courcy

When they first meet, Reginald is infatuated with Lady Susan and takes her mother's view that she is a spoilt, willful daughter. We learn that she is quite the opposite.
8. Before the book begins, what had Lady Susan done to make Catherine Vernon dislike her?

Answer: Tried to prevent Catherine from marrying Charles Vernon

She tried to prevent Catherine from marrying Charles Vernon. Lady Susan was married to Charles' older brother, so it was unlikely she would spread nasty rumours. She had also prevented Charles from buying Vernon Castle, when her husband was forced to sell it, because she did not want a younger brother to have what they could not afford to keep.
9. Who does Lady Susan marry at the end of the book?

Answer: Sir James Martin

Mr. Johnson was Mrs. Manwaring's guardian; he did not like Lady Susan and in the end forbade his wife from even writing to her. She married the silly, stupid, (but very rich) Sir James. She almost certainly continued her affair with Mr. Manwaring. Reginald married Frederica in the end.
10. When was "Lady Susan" first published?

Answer: 1871

It was first written in the early 1790's, most likely 1793-4. Jane Austen recopied it on paper watermarked 1805, but it was not published or given the title "Lady Susan" until 1871.
