Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christie based one of the characters in this book on the great American actress Ruth Draper. Which one?

Answer: Carlotta Adams

There are two actresses in this story, but it is Carlotta Adams, with her gift for mimicry, who is based on Ruth Draper. Draper specialized in one-woman shows in which she impersonated a number of different characters.
2. Who was Hastings surprised to see enthusiastically applauding Carlotta Adams' slightly malicious impersonation of Jane Wilkinson?

Answer: Jane Wilkinson

Hastings is wondering, as he watches Carlotta's imitation, how the subjects of her imitations react to them when, to his surprise, he sees Jane herself applauding and evidently quite delighted.
3. What surprise did Poirot and Hastings receive when they went to see Lord Edgware regarding his wife's desperate request for a divorce?

Answer: Lord Edgware tells them that he has already agreed to a divorce.

Poirot is utterly stupefied when Lord Edgware tells him that he has agreed to the divorce (in writing) and that Lady Edgware is well aware of the fact. He later theorizes that the letter may have been intercepted.
4. Hastings is further startled when he notices what upon leaving the interview with Lord Edgware?

Answer: A look of almost insane fury and rage on Lord Edgware's face.

As Hastings turns to close the study door, he notices Lord Edgware's face contorted in an expression of murderous rage. He later mentions to Poirot, who considers it highly significant.
5. Who was the first person to leave the table after the meal was completed at Sir Montague Corner's dinner at Chiswick?

Answer: Donald Ross

According to superstition, when there are thirteen at table, the first person to leave the table will die. This proves all too true for poor Donald Ross.
6. What was used to kill Lord Edgware?

Answer: A corn knife.

Lord Edgware was stabbed at the base of the skull with a corn knife (borrowed from Ellis). He died instantaneously without crying out.
7. What was used to poison Carlotta Adams?

Answer: Veronal

The Veronal was found in a small gold box with Carlotta's initials in rubies and the inscription "C.A. from D. Paris, Nov. 10. Sweet Dreams."
8. To whom had Carlotta Adams written shortly before her death?

Answer: Her sister

The letter to her sister in America contained the details of her planned impersonation of Lady Edgware the night of the murder, including the person who was paying her to do it.
9. What was missing from this letter?

Answer: One page and the first letter of one word.

The page containing the name of the person who paid for Carlotta's "performance" was missing and a corner of the following page, containing the letter S was torn off, changing the first word from "She" to "he".
10. What was Jenny Driver's profession?

Answer: Hatmaker

Jenny, a great friend of Carlotta's, owns a hat shop called Genevieve on Moffat Street. She is romantically involved with actor Bryan Martin and reminds Hastings of a fox terrier.
11. When taxed by Poirot as to who she thinks killed her husband, who does Lady Edgware name?

Answer: Geraldine Marsh

After a frustrated Poirot asks her three times who she thinks killed her husband, Jane rather abstractedly says "Geraldine, I expect". Geraldine is Edgware's daughter, who hated her father.
12. Why did Poirot not take seriously Miss Carroll's positive identification of Lady Edgware on the murder night?

Answer: She was too far away for a positive ID.

Miss Carroll clearly hated Lady Edgware and was anxious to implicate her. However, after experimenting with Hastings,Poirot realized that from the first floor bannister, looking down, she couldn't possibly have seen Lady Edgware's face clearly enough.
13. Who inherited Lord Edgware's title upon his death?

Answer: Ronald Marsh

Ronald Marsh, the dead man's nephew whom he had thrown out shortly before the murder, becomes the new Lord Edgware. He asks Poirot to join him in drinking a toast to murder, which has thus transformed him. Not surprisingly, he becomes a prime suspect, though Poirot believes him innocent.
14. What did Poirot notice on the Duke of Merton's desk during their brief interview?

Answer: A gushing love letter to Jane Wilkinson.

Poirot read the letter upside down. Although the Duke seemed a cold fish, his letter to Jane was maudlin in the extreme.
15. To whom did the glasses inadvertantly left in Carlotta's case belong?

Answer: Ellis

Jane had borrowed the glasses from Ellis, her maid, to impersonate the fictional Mrs. van Deusen, under whose name the hotel room at the Piccadilly Palace was registered.
16. Jane Wilkinson's ignorance of what legend from Greek mythology caused a minor stir at the Widburn's luncheon at Claridge's, attended by Poirot and Hastings?

Answer: The Judgement of Paris

When someone mentions the Judgement of Paris, Jane makes an inane remark about Paris fashions. This causes some momentary embarrassment and awaken's Donald Ross's suspicions.
17. To Poirot and Hasting's horror, Donald Ross is murdered in the middle of a phone call to Poirot. What was he about to reveal?

Answer: That the woman at the Chiswick dinner was not Jane Wilkinson.

Donald Ross remembers that, at the Chiswick dinner, "Jane Wilkinson" had been quite knowledgable about Greek art and history. After her gaffe at Claridge's, he realizes that this is not the same woman. Foolishly he asks Hastings, in front of Jane, when he can contact Poirot, which proves a fatal error.
18. Whom did Jane Wilkinson try to incriminate by altering the letter she found from Carlotta to her sister?

Answer: Ronald Marsh

Since Ronald Marsh and his falling out with his uncle were prominently mentioned in the letter, Jane realizes that by removing one page and tearing the corner of another to make "She" a "he", it would seem that it was Ronald who had paid for Carlotta's performance at Chiswick.
19. Why did Jane Wilkinson want her husband dead even though he had agreed to a divorce?

Answer: The Duke of Merton, whom she wanted to marry, was Catholic.

Although Lord Edgware had agreed to the divorce, both he and Jane knew that the devoutly Catholic Duke of Merton would never marry a divorcee.
20. The book ends with a letter from Jane Wilkinson to Poirot. In the postscript of this letter Jane, craving attention to the end, asks Poirot if he thinks they will put her where?

Answer: In Madame Tussauds.

She does not specify whether she prefers to be in the Chamber of Horrors or the Famous Persons gallery.
