Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who turned out to be the A.B.C. murderer?

Answer: Franklin Clarke

It was believed throughout the story that Alexander Bonaparte Cust was the murderer, until the end, when Poirot brilliantly deduced the real murderer.
2. How many murders did take place alphabetically?

Answer: 3

Only 3, as the fourth one was the murder of a gentleman whose name happened to start with an E.
A: Mrs Alice Ascher in Andover.
B: Elisabeth (Betty) Barnard in Bexhill-on-Sea.
C: Carmichael Clarke in Churston (the true murder).
3. What was the name of the Inspector from Scotland Yard?

Answer: Japp

Not a very amicable fellow. Your typical police officer, but a good one at that. He had a certain jealousy of Poirot.
4. What was the name of Poirot's partner?

Answer: Hastings

A very funny fellow, who seemed to have a certain grasp of the obvious, but in the end, played a major role in the capturing of the murderer. Poirot liked him a lot. They had a certain unparalleled chemistry together.
5. Was Mrs. Ascher strangled to death?

Answer: False

She was struck down with a heavy blow on the back of the head. A poor lady, with a niece by the name of Mary Drower, Alice Ascher was married to a drunk, and, at first, her husband was suspected of killing her.
6. What certain trademark was left on the scene of every murder?

Answer: A.B.C. railway guide

It was this that helped Poirot identify the pattern( which was the alphabetical method of killing victims) very early on, even before the second murder took place.
7. In which city did the fourth murder occur?

Answer: Doncaster

The murderer picked that one because there was a race taking place, and he took advantage of that. The murderer was very careless, since his purpose was already fulfilled - he had killed his brother and was on the verge of receiving his money.
8. How did the police catch Alexander Bonaparte Cust?

Answer: He fainted in the police department at Andover

He just couldn't take it anymore, although he didn't really commit the murders. He fainted and they caught him.
9. What was the name of the lady who lived in Cust's building?

Answer: Marbury

She was the first to suspect him. She couldn't believe it, considering she thought he wasn't that type of fellow.
10. At some point during the story, a certain "Legion of 6" was formed. The members of that Legion were: Poirot, Hastings, Japp, and some other Scotland Yard officers. True or False?

Answer: False

That Legion was comprised of the family members of the victims. It was formed because it was thought that they would have some interesting "insider" information that would help in the solving of the crime.
