Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Word Processor of the Gods", the last complete thing Richard entered into the word processor was that he lived alone with his son Jonathan.

Answer: False

"Word Processor of the Gods" is a different sort of Stephen King story, and is actually rather uplifting and hopeful. Richard is a decent man with a wife and son who hate him, while his worthless and mean brother Roger has a wonderful wife and teenage son Jonathan. Jon had made Richard a word processor for his birthday, right before Roger's family was killed in a drunk driving accident. Richard discovered that the word processor had the power to delete or insert whatever is entered into it. Richard then "deletes" his family and brings back Roger's family as his own.

The last thing that he entered into the word processor was that he lived with his wife Belinda and his son Jonathan.
2. What was Mrs. Todd's first name from the story "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut"?

Answer: Ophelia

"Mrs. Todd's Shortcut" is a story told by an old man named Homer, who knew Ophelia Todd before she disappeared. Mrs. Todd was always looking for a shortcut. She finally found the ultimate shortcut on a very scary road, which also had the power to make a person younger. Mrs. Todd disappeared, and it is implied that later Homer went with her. Homer always thought that when Mrs. Todd drove, she looked like the goddess Diana.
3. What major part of the beach was missing from the story "Beachworld"?

Answer: Ocean

"Beachworld" is a very strange story about a spaceship crash onto a planet that was basically one big beach. There was no ocean, just miles of sand and dunes. The survivors soon saw that the sand was somehow alive, and it drove one of the survivors crazy.

When the rescue ship came, the crazy man was left behind, and the beach attacked the ship as it tried to leave, but the ship got away. The man who was left behind was actually eating sand at the end of the story!
4. In "Uncle Otto's Truck", what color was the title truck?

Answer: Red

"Uncle Otto's Truck" is about a haunted truck. After Uncle Otto used the truck to kill his business partner, he kept the truck across from his house and went crazy watching it. He was convinced that the truck was slowly moving closer to him. Uncle Otto was found dead after swallowing three quarts of oil. The red color of the truck was commented on several times.
5. In "The Monkey", how did Hal get rid of the toy monkey when he was a child?

Answer: He threw it down the well

"The Monkey" is a story about a toy monkey; whenever it clapped its cymbals, someone nearby would die violently. Hal found the monkey as a child and threw it down an old well when he discovered its secret. He found it again as an adult, and he and his young son Petey got rid of the monkey, this time by throwing it in a deep lake.
6. What did George discover about his grandmother in "Gramma"?

Answer: She was a witch

"Gramma" is one of the scarier stories in this collection. In this story, 11-year-old George was left alone with his old, senile grandmother. Because of flashbacks about things he knew about Gramma and her "bad spells", George figured out that she was a witch, and very evil. Gramma died in his care, but she came back to life and transferred her "power" to George so that the evil could live.
7. In "The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands", did Davidson shake hands with Brower?

Answer: Yes

"The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands" tells the story of Brower, who was cursed in that he would never be able to enjoy human companionship. Anyone that he touched with his hands would die. This curse came about after he inadvertently caused the death of a holy man's son in Bombay. Because Davidson shook hands with Brower after a poker game, Davidson later died.

This story was told in the same setting as Stephen King's "The Breathing Method".
8. During flashbacks in "Survivor Type", which illegal act did Richard Pine NOT do?

Answer: Murdered a rival

"Survivor Type" is a very gruesome story about a surgeon who was stranded on a deserted island and resorted to eating himself to stay alive. Gross! In flashbacks, Richard Pine's many illegal misdeeds were revealed, but murder was never mentioned. At the end, he had eaten both legs, his earlobes, and one of his hands. Stephen King is one strange guy sometimes!
9. In "The Jaunt", what did convicted killer Rudy Foggia say the Jaunt was, after he took the Jaunt conscious and awake?

Answer: Eternity

"The Jaunt" is a version of the idea of traveling huge distances in a very short period of time, like hypersleep in some science fiction movies. If people were asleep while Jaunting, they came out just fine. But if they were awake, although it only took less than a second, the person came out absolutely ancient and died. Rudy Foggia was mentioned briefly in this story; he did the Jaunt awake, and when he came out, he said it was "eternity in there".
10. What happened to the people who saw the Reaper in "The Reaper's Image"?

Answer: They disappeared

"The Reaper" is a very short story, but it is one of my favorites. It tells the story of a priceless mirror, and the chosen few who see the image of the Reaper in it will just disappear when they are out of sight. While it is short, it is super creepy!
