Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vinny is Lt. Vanish's right-hand man, and nearly destroys Jonathan Chance in the last chapter of the book. (If you have not read the book and would like to before taking the test, visit http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze29q4m/LtVanish)

Answer: False

Vinny is Jonathan Chance's best friend and right-hand man in the book.
2. Of the following, which is something Lt. Vanish does in the book?

Answer: Changes sides and eventually shoots Col. Hyde

Vanish shoots Hyde in the shoulder. We later find out that after the shooting Vanish tied up Hyde and left him in a warehouse. The book ends with a series of newspaper clippings and one short chapter. One of the newspaper articles states that Col. Hyde is missing. We are not told whether Hyde died or escaped and went on the lamb, but one is left with the impression that he was left to die and has indeed expired.
3. What is Lt. Vanish's real name in the book?

Answer: Alec Cameron

Vanish was brain washed, and his identity erased by Col. Hyde.
4. Before he became Dr. Righteous's second-in-command what did Lt. Vanish do for a living?

Answer: He was the tour manager for the rock group Kilroy

Rather than having him jailed for aiding Kilroy in breaking law 672, Righteous decided it would be amusing to have Col. Hyde brain wash Alec Cameron and make him his second-in-command at the MMM.
5. According to the book, it turns out a video tape of Kilroy's last concert was made. Vinny manages to locate a bootleg copy for Jonathan and Robert. What does the tape reveal?

Answer: The MMM demonstrator was killed by one of his own

The tape shows MMM supporters surrounding the stage, blocking the audience view. However, an overhead shot reveals that Robert Kilroy was actually framed.
6. In the book, Jonathan Chance and Robert Kilroy publicly confront Dr. Righteous with internal memos sent by Dr. Righteous which supposedly prove Kilroy's innocence. What was the immediate result of that confrontation?

Answer: Dr. Righteous, Jonathan Chance, and Kilroy were all taken into custody and put in jail

Because there are conflicting bodies of evidence implicating all three for various crimes, all three men go to jail. Later Vinny, who was booked into jail during a seperate incident is released, Jonanthan is cleared off all charges, Robert's murder conviciton is overturned (no charges are filed for his prison escape), and Dr. Righteous is convicted of multiple murders, receiving a life-sentence.
7. In the story, what does Vinny's girlfriend Hope do?

Answer: Turns out to be a spy for the MMM and has Vinny arrested

Fortunately, Vinny sniffs her out early on, and uses her to feed faulty information to the MMM.
8. Anne, one of the resistance's greatest supporters, is also what?

Answer: An employee of the MMM AND The cousin of Dr. Righteous

The resistance uses Anne because she has high level computer access. However, she hides the fact that she is related to Righteous for fear the resistance will not trust her.
9. Who is the leader of the resistance?

Answer: Jonathan Chance

Kilroy and Vinny are among the most trusted leaders of the resistance, and McAlister is actually mentioned in passing as being hired by the MMM to plant a bomb.
10. What becomes of law 672?

Answer: It is repealed by Congress

The law was repealed shortly after Kilroy's lawful release from prison because Congress decided it was unconstitutional.
11. After the MMM headquarters was bombed in a terrorist-style attack which killed dozens of people, a news report carried a live phone conversation with a man claiming responsibility. According to the news report, who was this man?

Answer: Jonathan Chance

Voice analysis later proved the call to be a hoax. McAlister was the man who actually planted the bomb under the direction of Dr. Righteous.
12. Why was Jonathan never charged for aiding Kilroy's escape from prison?

Answer: Kilroy testified that he was not aided in his escape

Although not directly involved with the escape itself remember, it was Jonathan's jamming of the MMM broadcast signal that got Kilroy's attention and prompted his escape.
13. The documents which eventually proved Kilroy and Jonathan Chance innocent and implicated Dr. Righteous in various crimes were in the MMM database with passwords only Dr. Righteous himself knew. What were the passwords?

Answer: Names of rock bands Dr. Righeous loved as a child

One of the passwords was actually "Kilroy".
14. In the book, what is the name of Robert Kilroy's wife?

Answer: Molly

Robert sends her a note after his escape, and she is questioned by Dr. Righteous at one point, but does not play a major part in the story.
15. How are the chapters named?

Answer: They are quotes of Styx lyrics from various albums

Many do come from the "Kilroy" album as the book tells the album's story. However some chapter titles were taken from other albums because they were more fitting. An example of this would be "Tonight's The Night We'll Make History" which is a lyric contained on two different tracks of the "Paradise Theatre" album.

Althought titles were taken from various albums, the plot is restricted to "Kilroy Was Here" and "Caught In The Act".
16. Which, of the following, is not one of the leaders of the resistance?

Answer: Alec Cameron

The leadership was very small and consisted of Jonathan, Vinny, Harry, Eddie, and Kilroy (Who was obviously a late-comer, but invaluable as a figure-head). Only Jonathan Chance knew all the workings of the resistance - This was for security, so that information could not be tortured out of one member of the leadership should any of them be caught.
17. In the book, the descrption of Jonathan Chance is based on which Stygian?

Answer: Tommy Shaw

Many of the main characters' physical descriptions are based on Stygians; Robert Kilroy is based on Dennis DeYoung. Col. Hyde and Lt. Vanish are based on the Panozzo brothers (they are not related in the book, however). Dr. Righteous is based on James Young.
18. In the book, Jonathan airs a copy of a video tape which proves Kilroy's innocence. What is the immediate result?

Answer: Dr. Righteous publicly "debunks" the tape - nothing happens

It is not until later, with the assistance of Congressman Wylie, that Kilroy and Chance are able to implicate Righteous in the death of the slain MMM protester, as well as the MMM bombing.
19. Of the following, who is NOT a member of both the MMM AND the resistance?

Answer: None of these - They are ALL members of both organizations!

Lt. Vanish discovers his true identity as Alec Cameron, and begins working for the resistance covertly within the MMM. Anne works in the MMM and has access to the computers which she uses to aid the resistance. Hope, on the otherhand, is loyal to the MMM and working covertly within the resistance.
20. In "Caught In The Act" Kilroy's last concert was at the Paradise Theatre. According to "Whispers In The Night", after the repeal of law 672, Kilroy's first concert also took place at the Paradise Theatre.

Answer: True

The theatre is restored, after serving for years as "The Museum Of Rock Pathology".
