The star of this film, Jim Carrey, had been working mainly in TV until 1994 when his big break came. He starred in three well received films that year ("Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "The Mask", and "Dumb and Dumber").

The film was very well received in Japan where it won one award and was nominated for another.

Many of the players in the game scenes are actual players from the Johnstown Jets, a team that used to play in the American Hockey League which is now defunct.

Wayne and Garth were played by Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. Both Mike and Dana were nominated for Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture (Leading Role) in the American Comedy Awards. The pair won the Best On-Screen Duo award at the MTV Movie + TV Awards.

Horton is ridiculed by his neighbours. Fortunately, Horton saves the Whos from disaster. The two main characters, Horton and the Mayo), are voiced by Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.

Catherine Johnson created the musical using existing songs of the pop group ABBA to link the storyline together. The songs were all originally written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the two male members of ABBA. A follow up film, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", was released in 2018 which continued the story five years later.
