1. One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937)

Answer: Deanna Durbin

The girl is Patsy Cardwell, played by Deanna Durbin, and the hundred men are an orchestra of unemployed musicians which she persuades Leopold Stokowski to conduct. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and won the Award for Original Music Score. Famed for her soprano voice, Durbin received a Juvenile Academy Award in 1938.

She retired in 1949 and spent the rest of her life in France.
2. His Girl Friday (1940)

Rosalind Russell plays Hildy Johnson, a star newspaper reporter about to marry and give up journalism. Her editor, and ex-husband, played by Cary Grant, is determined to stop this happening. Meanwhile a convicted murderer has escaped from jail, offering Hildy the scoop of a lifetime. Screwball comedy "His Girl Friday" is the second film version of stage play "The Front Page" by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, in which the original Hildy Johnson was male.
3. Cover Girl (1944)

Rita Hayworth played both Rusty Parker, a nightclub chorine given the opportunity to become a magazine cover girl, and Rusty's grandmother, an 1890's showgirl. The film's dance routines were choreographed by Gene Kelly, who starred as Rusty's boyfriend Danny, and the songs were provided by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin. Martha Mears dubbed Hayworth's singing voice.
4. Georgy Girl (1966)

Answer: Lynn Redgrave

Lynn Redgrave was Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Georgina (Georgy) Parkin, a naive young woman who ends up caring for her promiscuous flatmate's baby. Based on a novel by Margaret Forster, the film also starred Charlotte Rampling, Alan Bates and James Mason. The title song, written by Tom Springfield and Jim Dale and recorded by The Seekers, received an Oscar nomination.
5. Funny Girl (1968)

Answer: Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand created the role of comedienne Fanny Brice on Broadway. Starring opposite Omar Sharif in the movie version earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, for which she tied with Katharine Hepburn's performance in "The Lion in Winter". Streisand reprised the role of Brice in the 1975 sequel "Funny Lady".
6. There's a Girl in My Soup (1970)

Goldie Hawn plays Marion, a 19-year-old American hippy, who has an affair with a middle aged, womanising TV personality played by Peter Sellers. The film was based on a long-running British stage comedy by Terence Frisby. Hawn received a British Film Academy Best Actress nomination for her performances in both "There's a Girl in my Soup" and "Cactus Flower", the latter film having earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
7. The Goodbye Girl (1977)

Marsha Mason received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of dancer Paula McFadden. With an original screenplay by Mason's then-husband Neil Simon, "The Goodbye Girl" also featured an Oscar-winning performance from Richard Dreyfuss.
8. Working Girl (1988)

Melanie Griffith earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of thwarted secretary Tess McGill. Nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, romantic comedy "Working Girl" also starred Harrison Ford as well as Sigourney Weaver and Joan Cusack, who both received Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominations. Carly Simon won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Let the River Run".
9. Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)

Based on the 1999 novel by Tracy Chevalier, "Girl with a Pearl Earring" starred Scarlett Johansson as Griet, a maid in the household of painter Johannes Vermeer. Nominated for Oscars for Art Direction, Cinematography and Costume Design, the film also starred Colin Firth as Vermeer.
10. The Danish Girl (2015)

Answer: Alicia Vikander

Although arguably the role was large enough to merit a Best Actress nomination, Alicia Vikander's portrayal of painter Gerda Wegener won her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. The girl in the title, Gerda's husband Einar/Lili Elbe, was played by Eddie Redmayne, who received a Best Actor Oscar nomination.
