Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Finish the lyric: "Pop, six, squish, uh uh, Cicero...."

Answer: Lipschitz

This is the chant repeated during the "Cell Block Tango", the most amazing number in the film. Lipschitz was the artistic guy that Mya killed because he cheated on her with two women and a man.
2. Who did the original choreography for "Chicago"?

Answer: Bob Fosse

Bob Fosse was known for his choreography that focused on isloated movements and his use of hats as props. See if you can find the one scene in which hats are used.
3. Who played the piano player involved in the entire movie, that introduced every song and dance number?

Answer: Taye Diggs

This was not Taye Diggs' first bout with musicals. He originated the role of Benny in "Rent" on Broadway.
4. Who was originally asked to play Mya's part as the sixth dancer in "Cell Block Tango"?

Answer: Gwen Stefani

Gwen turned it down because she was too busy touring. Mya grew up tap dancing so she was a natural to take over the part.
5. Who was originally supposed to take on the role of Roxie Hart?

Answer: Madonna

Madonna wanted to play Roxie, but pre-production was taking too long so she backed out. Then Rob Marshall begged Renee to do it, but she was too afraid. So Marshall took her to a rehearsal and she was automatically hooked.
6. Richard Gere did his own tap dancing.

Answer: True

I know, I couldn't believe it either! But he demonstrated it for Matt Lauer on the "Today Show", so it has to be true! He also said it was the hardest part because he had NO previous experience.
7. What movie was John C. Reilly not in, in the past year?

Answer: Adaptation

John C. Reilly has perfected the pitiful husband routine, and we love him for it! In "Chicago" he played Roxie's husband, Amos, Julianne Moore's husband in "The Hours", and Jennifer Aniston's husband Phil, in "The Good Girl". He gets cheated on in all three. Poor guy! He was also in "Gangs of New York", but with a smaller part than his roles in the other films.
8. Catherine Zeta-Jones wanted to wear the short wig, as opposed to keeping her hair long because she wanted all the critics to know it was her instead of a dance double.

Answer: True

Rob Marshall wanted Catherine to keep her hair long because he thought it would bring something to the part, but Catherine wanted to wear the wig so everyone would know it was her doing all the dancing.
9. Which song that appears on the soundtrack does not appear in the movie?

Answer: Class

"Class" is sung by Velma and Mama, but it was taken out of the movie because in Rob Marshall's interpretation of the story, all the musical numbers were a part of Roxie's imagination. He filmed the number but then took it out because there was no way Roxie could have known that Velma and Mama Morton were talking about this topic. You can hear the song on the soundtrack though!
10. What name does Billy Flynn mistakenly call Amos throughout the movie?

Answer: Andy

The only time Flynn actually calls him Amos is in the courtroom scene when Amos takes the stand. This adds to Amos' belief that he is "Mr. Cellophane".
11. How many kids does Fred Caseley have?

Answer: 5

This is revealed by the D.A. when it comes out that Roxie was having an affair with Fred. "With a wife and five little Caseleys." The D.A. found pictures of the kids in Fred's wallet.
12. Finish the lyric: "There are many favors, I'm prepared to do. You do one for mama,..."

Answer: she'll do one for you

This is sung by Matron Mama Morton in her opening number. It explains her practice of giving favors for money. This is how all her girls get nice things even though they are in jail. My question is, how are they getting the money in the first place?
13. What did Kitty Baxter's family make their money from?

Answer: Pineapples

It is revealed that Kitty Baxter's (played by Lucy Liu) mother owns all the pineapples in Hawaii. She is the heiress that kills her boyfriend and the two women he is cheating on her with in a triple homicide. She takes the attention off Roxie, but only for a moment, as Roxie comes up with a masterful plan to get Billy Flynn's full attention back on herself.
14. What did Roxie think the dress that Billy wanted her to wear during the trial looked like?

Answer: a Woolworth's lampshade

She eventually ends up wearing it, and it's actually not that bad! In the courtroom scene she is also shown knitting... All part of Billy Flynn's masterful plan.
15. Where did Velma say the caramels that she received from a fan were from?

Answer: San Francisco

This conversation takes place when Velma is trying to suck up to Roxie and she sings "I Can't Do It Alone". "Look what some Johnny sent me. Triple cream caramels all the way from San Francisco."
16. How many times did one of the "Cell Block Tango" girls say her husband "ran into my knife" (how many times did he run into the knife, not how many times did she say the phrase)?

Answer: 10

"And then he ran into my knife... he ran into my knife ten times."
17. Finish the lyric: "Where the gin is cold, but..."

Answer: The piano's hot

This is my favorite lyric from "All That Jazz". "Come on babe, I know a whoopee spot, where the gin is cold, but the piano is hot. It's just a noisy hall where there's a nightly brawl and all that jazz."
18. This is Rob Marshall's feature film directorial debut (this does not count television/commercial/made for tv work).

Answer: True

Marshall is a dancer who met Bob Fosse once, and decided he had to make a movie of "Chicago". He choreographed the movie as well!
19. Finish the lyric: "Right up here..."

Answer: is where I store the juice

This is another fabulous lyric from "All That Jazz".
20. Catherine Zeta-Jones was pregnant during the beginning of the filming of the movie.

Answer: False

During the filming Zeta-Jones was in between kids, so to speak. She had just had her son, Dylan, and it was before she got pregnant with her daughter, Carys Zeta Douglas, who was born at the end of April, 2003.
21. How much does Billy Flynn charge for his services?

Answer: $5,000

Flynn doesn't care if the client is guilty or innocent, he just wants $5,000.
22. What excuse did Velma use when she got asked where Veronica was in the first scene of the movie?

Answer: She's not herself tonight

Velma had already shot her and when the owner asks where Veronica is, she tells him that she's "not herself tonight". Then Velma tells him, "Don't sweat it, I can do it alone."
23. What's the name of the club that Roxie first sees Velma performing in?

Answer: The Onyx

Fred takes Roxie there to collect on a bet from the trombone player, and Roxie is in complete awe of Velma. This is also the theatre that Roxie is auditioning in at the very end of the movie, where Velma approaches her to do an act together.
24. Who is the actress that Roxie dreams of being bigger than, and Mama Morton tells her with the right publicity, it is possible?

Answer: Sophie Tucker

Roxie dreams of getting billed above Sophie Tucker and sings about it in "Roxie".
25. Who wrote the screenplay for the movie "Chicago"?

Answer: Bill Condon

Condon's script is genius and the movie would not be the same without his beautiful words. He also directed and wrote "Gods and Monsters", starring Sir Ian McKellan.
