Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I portrayed the band leader who introduced many songs in the movie. Who am I?

Answer: Taye Diggs

Diggs, born on January 2nd, 1971, in New Jersey, was cast as the band leader. The band leader was just known as the band leader and thus did not have a name. You first saw the band leader when he introduced Velma Kelly at the beginning of "Chicago" and Kelly sang a song.

A couple of other songs he introduced were "Funny Honey", "Cell Block Tango" and "All I Care About". The only time you saw the band leader was when he introduced a song and its singer(s). Diggs guest starred on the TV series', "Grey's Anatomy", "Private Practice" and "Will & Grace".
2. My character was a part of the cell block and had a connection to a hotel called Cicero. Who am I?

Answer: Catherine Zeta-Jones

Zeta-Jones, a native of Wales, landed the role of Velma Kelly for Rob Marshall's film version of "Chicago." We first saw Velma in the film's opening scene when she sang "All That Jazz." Near the end of her rendition of the song, police came into the club where she was located and arrested her. During the song, "Cell Block Tango", we found out that Kelly was in prison because she allegedly shot someone dead at The Cicero Hotel. Roxie Hart looked up to Velma and, in one scene, asked her for advice. Velma told her to keep her hands off of her laundry since Roxie washed her clothes.

The day before Roxie had her press conference, Velma advised Roxie to not let her lawyer, Billy Flynn, have the spotlight (but Billy stole the spotlight, anyway). Velma approached Roxie, one day, and offered her some caramel chocolates that someone sent her from San Francisco. Roxie denied the request and Velma told Roxie they could do an act together.

At the end of the film, Roxie and Velma performed together and brought down the house. Zeta-Jones was seen in the movies, "Entrapment", "Traffic" and "Ocean's Twelve." She won an Academy Award in 2003 for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for he role of Velma Kelly in "Chicago".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture that year were Kathy Bates for "About Schmidt", "Meryl Streep for "Adaptation", Queen Latifah for "Chicago" and Julianne Moore for "The Hours".
3. I was briefly seen as a woman who gave the reporters a few choice words. Who am I?

Answer: Lucy Liu

Liu, born in 1968 in Queens, New York, had the minor role of Kitty Baxter. Billy Flynn was seen, one night, talking to some friends about Kitty and he mentioned that she went back to her hotel room, one night, and saw her boyfriend, Harry, in bed with another woman. Kitty went and got a gun and shot Harry dead.

When she was first brought to the prison, the reporters asked her for a couple of words and she said she had three words for them and they were to go to hell. One reporter asked her if she had any regrets and Kitty told all the reporters she only regretted getting caught. Liu had guest starring stints on the TV series', "Ugly Betty", "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Joey".
4. I was the Assistant District Attorney who prosecuted Roxie Hart. Who am I?

Answer: Colm Feore

Feore played Martin Harrison, an Assistant District Attorney. Harrison promised the reporters that he would file charges against Roxie Hart for murder. Many speculated that this case would help Harrison become the Governor of Illinois. Mama Morton, at the prison, came upon a diary that Roxie Hart wrote in and told Velma Kelly about it. Vela told Harrison there was some pertinent information in the diary and asked Harrison that all the charges against her be dropped in exchange for her testimony against Roxie. Harrison submitted Roxie's diary into evidence at the trial and had Velma read aloud some passages that Roxie supposedly wrote. Roxie objected and said that she never wrote what Velma read aloud to the court.

When Billy Flynn questioned Velma Kelly, he insinuated that Harrison wrote some passages in Roxie's diary to make her look guilty.

This helped get Roxie acquitted of all murder charges. After the trial, Billy told Roxie he forged some entries in her diary and Roxie got upset but Billy reminded her she was free and he got her off. Feore had roles in the films, "Changeling", "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "The Sum of All Fears".
5. My character was Roxie's husband. Who am I?

Answer: John C. Reilly

Reilly, born on May 24th, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, portrayed Amos Hart in "Chicago". Amos was Roxie's husband and, unbeknown to him, Roxie cheated on him with Fred Casely while he worked at the garage. On the night that Roxie shot Fred dead, Amos tried to take the blame for his death but he eventually ratted out Roxie and she was arrested. Amos pledged his love for Roxie and came up with $2,000 to retain Billy Flynn as her lawyer.

At one point, Roxie claimed she was pregnant but she revealed to Amos that there was no baby. Reilly starred in the films, "The Perfect Storm", "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Magnolia".

In 2003, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role as Amos Hart in "Chicago" but he lost to Chris Cooper of "Adaptation".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture that year were Christopher Walken for "Catch Me If You Can", Ed Harris for "The Hours" and Paul Newman for "Road To Perdition".
6. I was the person whom many people looked up to at the prison. I was employed as the matron there and helped them get counsel. Who am I?

Answer: Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah, a native of Newark, New Jersey, landed the part of Matron Mama Morton for the movie. The inmates at the prison where Morton worked, referred to her as "Mama" and looked up to her since she gave them advice. Mama told Roxie that murder was a form of entertainment in Chicago and the best way to help get a win at trial was to become famous and get the people to like you. Mama was seen, on a couple of occasions, taking money from the inmates in order to make a phone call to get them an attorney. Mama told Roxie that the best criminal attorney to get was Billy Flynn. Queen Latifah landed roles in other films, such as, "Bringing Down the House", "Jungle Fever" and "Beauty Shop".
7. My character was a hot shot lawyer whom many women sought for representation when they went on trial. Who am I?

Answer: Richard Gere

Gere, born in 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was cast as Billy Flynn for this film version of "Chicago". Billy Flynn had a reputation for being the best criminal defense lawyer in Illinois. Mama recommended Roxie get him to represent her. In Billy's first song that he sang, called "All I Care About", he said that he did not care for expensive things but that all he cared about was love. Roxie phoned up Billy's office and had him come down to meet her at the prison. Billy told her if she could come up with a $5,000 retainer, he would be her lawyer. Amos went to Billy and gave him $2,000 of a retainer and this upset Billy at first, but he agreed to take Roxie's case. Billy told Amos that he appreciated his devotion towards Roxie. Gere was seen in the movies, "An Officer and a Gentleman", "Pretty Woman" and "Shall We Dance?"
8. I played an ambitious reporter, whose last name was something one could see in the morning. Who am I?

Answer: Christine Baranski

Baranski had the small role of reporter Mary Sunshine. Miss Sunshine was usually the most visible reporter the viewers could see when an array of reporters went to interview the women on the prison cell block. She asked Velma Kelly questions about her upcoming trial, to which Velma admitted she was innocent and that would be proven.

At Roxie's press conference, Miss Sunshine asked Roxie where she came from and Roxie answered that she was from Mississippi. In one scene, one saw Miss Sunshine give her assistant an article she typed up. Sunshine was the one who reported when Roxie fainted in the courtroom. Baranski guest starred on the TV series, "Ugly Betty", "Ghost Whisperer" and "Now and Again".
9. My character was the one Roxie had an affair with and I died as a result of her going wild with a gun. Who am I?

Answer: Dominic West

West, born on October 15th, 1969, in Yorkshire, England, took on the role of Fred Casely. Fred was a furniture salesman, but he had contacts in the entertainment business. He had an affair with Roxie while she was married to Amos and he promised her he would get her an act at the Onyx.

When Roxie asked Fred about the act, he told her that she would never have an act and that he lied when he claimed he spoke to those in the entertainment business about her. Roxie became furious and shot Casely dead. West starred in the TV series, "The Wire", "The Wire: The Chronicles" and "The Catherine Tate Show".
10. I was imprisoned when I shot dead my furniture salesman boyfriend. Who am I?

Answer: Renee Zellweger

Zellweger, a native of Katy, Texas, was cast in the lead role of Roxie Hart. Roxie was arrested when she shot Fred Casely dead and asked for assistance for her trial. She got a recommendation to get Billy Flynn as her lawyer and Billy took her case. Billy told Roxie that her defense to killing Fred Casley was that they both leapt for the gun while they had a fight and Roxie killed him in self defense. Roxie was eventually acquitted.

After Roxie's trial, Velma went to see Roxie and she told Roxie that some guy wanted Velma to find someone to do an act with her since people wanted to see two performers at the same time. Roxie and Velma's act together, which was shown at the end of the film, proved to be a major success. Zellweger starred in the films, "Jerry Maguire", "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Nurse Betty".

In 2003, Zellweger received an Academy Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Motion Picture for her role of Roxie Hart in "Chicago" but lost to Nicole Kidman of "The Hours".
