Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the movie starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton which is about an artist living with her illegitimate son in a Big Sur beach shack?

Answer: The Sandpiper

The relationship between Burton and Taylor begins to develop when she is forced into sending her son to school. There are lots of lingering shots of the sands and the sea and, naturally, temptation soon begins to arise.
2. What was the name of the movie about a German attempt during World War II to land in England and to assassinate Churchill?

Answer: The Eagle Has Landed

The movie starred Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Robert Duvall and Jenny Agutter. The takeover of an English village by the Germans was a fascinating subject but the earlier "Went the Day Well" directed by Calvalcanti is a much better attempt, largely because it doesn't bend over backwards to create implausibly "good" Germans.
3. Errol Flynn is the hero in "The Sea Hawk" but which famous actress plays the part of Queen Elizabeth I standing up to the threat of invasion from Spain?

Answer: Flora Robson

The plot of the movie owes some part of its storyline to Raphael Sabatini's novel but all its flaws and improbabilities are swept aside by the pace and scope of the action. Erich Korngold's musical score brought him an Academy Award nomination and a place in everybody's memory.
4. What was the name of the director, famed for his movies in the horror genre, who made "The Raven" inspired by the poem of Edgar Allan Poe?

Answer: Roger Corman

Corman directs a film about two magicians from the 15th century who fight a duel to the death using all the tricks of their trade. The product had little to do with Poe's poem in terms of either content or quality though most of the usual actors - Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff - were lined up to do their stuff.
5. What is the name of the film starring Charlton Heston and Elsa Martinelli which is set in Italy during World War II?

Answer: The Pigeon That Took Rome

The Germans are occupying Rome and so American secret service agents are smuggled in to try to ensure a take-over that doesn't involve too much destruction. Carrier pigeons play their part as do a cranky old man and two pretty young girls.
6. "The Goose Steps Out" was a British movie made during World War II. Which British comedian was its star?

Answer: Will Hay

The plot is about how an incompetent teacher (Will Hay) is sent to Germany to replace his Nazi double and to steal a secret weapon. Amongst the cast were talents as diverse as Charles Hawtrey and Peter Ustinov.
7. "Duck Soup" is one of the famous Marx Brothers movies. But which is the correct plot?

Answer: It's the one about the country of Fredonia and its new president.

It's one of the Marx brothers' movies that dispenses with the musical interludes. Seeing an incompetent in charge of a country is now becoming routine but nobody does it better than Groucho and his clan.
8. "The Maltese Falcon" starred Humphrey Bogart,Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet, Elisha Cook Junior, Barton MacLane and Peter Lorre but only one actor was nominated for an Academy Award. Who was it?

Answer: Sidney Greenstreet

It was also nominated for best picture and John Huston was nominated in his role of writer. An earlier version in 1931 had starred Ricardo Cortez and Bebe Daniels. The original story was written by Dashiell Hammett who had worked in the real world of detection as a Pinkerton agent.
9. What was the name of the British 1960s movie starring James Booth and Barbara Windsor about a sailor returning from the sea and threatening vengeance on his wife's lover?

Answer: Sparrows Can't Sing

A stage musical that never achieved real success as a movie, "Sparrows Can't Sing" was a very British film and was stuffed full of Cockneys both real and assumed. The cast also included Roy Kinnear, Avis Bunnage, George Sewell, Murray Melvin and Arthur Mullard.
10. Which description best fits the plot of the movie "Seagulls Over Sorrento"?

Answer: The events at a naval research station on a Scottish island.

This movie was made by the Boulting brothers for MGM and starred Gene Kelly supported by a whole cast of 1950s British character actors such as John Justin, Bernard Lee, Sidney James and Patrick Barr.
