Answer: When he is discriminated against, and kicked out of the saloon in front of Emmett and Paden.

Mal, Danny Glover's character is a good man, traveling from Chicago to find his family, and help them with their ranch. When he comes into the saloon, he only asks for a glass of whiskey, and a bed for the night after ten days of travel, but because he is black, he is being discriminated against.

He is tired of what is unfair in the world, and wants to do something about it. He leaves the town to continue his journey to see his parents.

Answer: A fancy two gun rig

Sheriff Langston, played by John Cleese of Monty Python fame, reacts to Emmett by saying, "I know where that gentleman is." Jake, played by Kevin Costner, is wild and immature. He loves life and likes to have fun. He is also an excellent shot.

After Emmett and Paden visit Jake in jail, Emmett explains that he must free Jake from jail because Jake is his brother. Paden says that Emmett will have to deal him out on that because he has had experience with freeing people from jail, and he doesn't want anymore of it. There are no hard feelings between them about this.

The deputy tells him to come to the front of the jail cell, and he walks sort of strangely and stiffly. The deputy asks for his hands to come through the bars, so he can be handcuffed. Jake's arm comes through Paden's coat, and he sucker punches the deputy. Jake and Paden escape.

Ezra's wife passed away, and McKendrick and his men have run off Ezra and burned him out. His only daughter, Ray has gone off to town and has become a barmaid.

Answer: He will start carving their cattle into steaks.

If that is one thing that Mal knows how to do, it's carving cattle into steaks from his experience in the slaughterhouses of Chicago.

Cobb has a sweet deal for a bad guy. Not only is he the sheriff, and a saloon owner but has an agreement with the McKendrick family to protect each other's corrupt, and profitable interests.
