Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a now iconic scene from John Rosenberg's 'Cool Hand Luke', the title character, played by Paul Newman, bets that he can eat how many eggs?

Answer: 50

George Kennedy, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor opposite Newman, claimed in his account, 'Trust Me: A Memoir', that, contrary to his costar's famous line, in fact Newman consumed no more than eight eggs, vomiting these up at the first opportunity after the director said cut.
2. Sylvester Stallone's Rocky begins his day with a big glass of raw eggs. The following training montage features the boxer running up what are now referred to as the 'Rocky Steps'. In which American city can these be found?

Answer: Philadelphia

The steps belong to the Philadelphia Art Museum in Stallone's hometown. Incidentally the newly invented steadicam, used to film that scene, also comes from the City of Brotherly Love, having been introduced by Garrett Brown in 1975, according to Wikipedia.

Other sights from the city seen in the montage include the Schuylkil River, the Italian market, and the Spectrum Arena, where Rocky is hailed as 'Philadelphia's favourite son'.
3. One unfortunate passenger suffering from an unusual affliction in the 1980 comedy, 'Airplane!', spouts three unhatched bird eggs from her mouth. Which actor, also famous for his roles in the 'Naked Gun' series, plays the less than reassuring doctor on board?

Answer: Leslie Nielsen

'Airplane!' satirises a 1957 TV movie, 'Zero Hour'! written by Arthur Hailey, who would go on to write 'Airplane!'. Hailey is, therefore, credited as writer on a film which parodies and quotes verbatim from his own work. Appropriately, then, this was the deadpan Nielsen's first comedy role and made him a regular collaborator with director trio Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker.
4. A bewildered Sigourney Weaver has her fried eggs ruined by a pesky poltergeist in 1984 film, 'Ghostbusters'. What instrument does her character, Dana Barrett, play?

Answer: Cello

Though she is never seen playing it in the film, we learn that Dana has played cello 'in a major symphony orchestra', as she tries to tell a distracted Bill Murray that she has just been given a promotion.
5. In Ridley Scott's 1979 film, 'Alien', a creature on an unknown planet breaks out of an egg and attaches itself to the face of crew member Kane. Out of which British actor's chest did the creature later emerge?

Answer: John Hurt

The actor was nominated for a Bafta for his explosive performance, one which none of his costars had been warned about beforehand. His costar Veronica Cartwright was on the receiving end of a jet of blood from Hurt's chest and her reaction of genuine shock helped to earn her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
6. Another legend of British cinema, Alfred Hitchcock once claimed to be terrified of eggs. In his 1963 film 'The Birds' the director overcomes his fears to make a brief cameo. What kind of shop is he seen leaving?

Answer: A pet shop

Early in the film Hitchcock is seen leaving a pet shop, flanked by his Stealyham Terriers, Geoffrey and Stanley. The director also starred in the trailer, advertising his film as a lecture on birds and at one point holding up an egg to camera, making an ominous reference to man's farming and caging of the creatures.
7. In the original Jurassic Park movie the newcomers to the island witness the hatching of Velociraptor eggs. A concerned Jeff Goldblum worries what the consequences will be if the creatures are allowed to breed in the wild. How does the Jurassic Park scientist claim to have prevented this from happening?

Answer: All the dinosaurs are female.

Despite this reassurance, Goldblum's character remains skeptical, replying gnomically that 'life finds a way'. Later in the film, he is vindicated when Dr Grant and the kids find dinosaur eggs in the wild.
8. Veruca Salt is deemed to be a 'bad egg' by Mr Wonka's Eggdicator in Mel Stuart's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Which of these children was NOT on the tour with her?

Answer: Arthur Slugworth

A more prominent character in the 1971 film than the original book, Arthur Slugworth is introduced to the audience as a jealous, rival chocolatier, though it later transpires that his real name is Mr Wilkinson and that he has been working for Mr Wonka all along. By this point in the film Augustus Gloop has already met a sticky end, while Violet has turned violet. With Veruca's disappearance only Charlie Bucket and Mike Teavee are left on the tour.
9. 2005 saw another adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel and another trip to the Golden Egg Room with Johnny Depp as Mr Wonka. Who was director this time round?

Answer: Tim Burton

According to Wikipedia, Martin Scorsese was involved in the film's early production, though the only director that the Roald Dahl estate would grant full approval to was Burton, who brought regular collaborators Johnny Depp and Danny Elfman with him.
10. In the 2005 adaptation of Alan Moore's V for Vendetta how does the masked crusader like his eggs in the morning?

Answer: Eggs in a basket

V, portrayed by Hugo Weaving, cooks breakfast for Natalie Portman's character, Evey, while she is staying in his secret underground lair. Perhaps not coincidentally, Evey's boss, played by Stephen Fry, also cooks eggs in a basket.
