Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Was "The Love Bug" the first Herbie movie?

Answer: Yes

Yes, "The Love Bug" was the first Herbie movie from Disney. It became an instant hit and nobody could get enough of Herbie. The movie spawned five sequels. "Herbie Rides Again", "Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo", "Herbie Goes Bananas", "Herbie: The Movie" and of course, "Herbie: Fully Loaded".
2. How did Dean Jones's character, Jim, meet Herbie?

Answer: Herbie tapped Jim's leg when Jim was at the car dealership.

While Jim was at the car dealership and about to leave, Herbie came up behind Jim and tapped the back of his leg with the front bumper. Herbie liked Jim!
Herbie even went as far as to follow Jim home after he got on the trolley. The next day, Herbie was in front of Jim's house and he had no idea how Herbie got there. It was too cute.
3. How did Jim meet Michele Lee's character, Carole?

Answer: She worked at the car dealership.

Their first meeting was quite comical. Jim was walking down the sidewalk and Carole was putting a sign up in the window of the car dealership and all you could see was her legs.
Jim liked what he saw and he got closer not realizing there was a window there and he bumped his head on the glass.
The sign said "Take A Look At These". That's exactly what Jim did even if the sign was talking about cars. LOL.
Carole apologized to Jim and had him sit down and that was their first meeting.
4. How did Herbie get his name?

Answer: Buddy Hackett's character, Tennessee, named him after his uncle Herb.

When Jim and Tennessee were driving Herbie to the racetrack, Tennessee started calling the car Herbie. Jim asked him why Herbie and Tennessee told him that the car looked like his Uncle Herb from the front. It was so cute.
That's how Herbie got his name.
5. Herbie really wanted Jim and Carole together. What did he do to them so they had to spend some time together?

Answer: He drove them up to the makeout place and locked the doors.

Herbie was of course known as "The Love Bug". He was a matchmaker. He wanted Jim and Carole together so when Jim and Carole were in the car together for the first time he purposely drove them up to the makeout place and locked the doors.
At first all Jim and Carole did was fight. They blamed each other for driving Herbie to the makeout place and locking the doors and so on.
Eventually though Jim and Carole did fall in love.
6. When did Jim, Carole and Tennessee realize that Herbie really did have a mind of his own?

Answer: All of these.

At first, Herbie appeared to be a normal, little car. When Jim started driving him, he took control and Jim didn't like it and wanted to take Herbie back but Carole wouldn't let him.
Jim decided to race Herbie and Herbie helped Jim win the races because he was fast. Jim's head started to get a little swelled and took all the credit for winning the races.
Then Jim went and bought a brand new fancy car. Herbie was so jealous and started crashing into it and wrecking it and then drove away to kill himself because he didn't feel he was good enough.
Luckily Jim wised up and found Herbie and stopped him from killing himself. After that none of them doubted that Herbie was a special car, he was a car with a soul and a heart.
7. What did Herbie do to Thorndyke, Carole's boss, every time Thorndyke was mean to him?

Answer: Squirted oil on his shoe.

Thorndyke was a jerk. Carole worked for him in the beginning of the movie and that's how Jim and Carole met. But, when Thorndyke realized that Jim couldn't afford to buy an expensive car from him he told him to leave.
If you have seen this movie, this question is a little tricky. Yes, Herbie did try to run over Thorndyke but that wasn't till the end of the movie. Herbie squirted oil on Thorndyke's foot up until the end of the movie and then Herbie started getting more aggressive.
When Herbie came out to the showroom to see Jim, Thorndyke was immediately mean to Herbie for no reason and kicked him. To get back at Thorndyke, Herbie squirted oil on his shoe. This happened more than once in the movie and it was hilarious every time. Thorndyke deserved it.
8. Dean Jones played more than one role in this film.

Answer: True

When Carole and Jim were at the drive-in restaurant before Herbie takes them to the makeout place, Carole was pounding on the window and screaming because Herbie had locked her in and wouldn't let her out.
The people next to them who Carole was screaming at were two hippies and one of the hippies was Dean Jones in makeup. I found this out when I was watching the documentary on the Special Features disc. I thought that was so neat.
9. Does Herbie win the last race near the end of the movie?

Answer: Yes

Herbie won the last race in a very interesting way. Even though Thorndyke had been doing things to Herbie for the past couple of days so Herbie couldn't win, he filled the gas tank up with water, he got Herbie drunk, he rigged the car so the wheels would fall off, etc. All this caused poor Herbie to break in half.
Despite this, Herbie still managed to win the race. He came in first...and third! It was really funny.
Jim and Carole were so happy that Herbie won. The two ends of the car end up on top of each other when the three of them are congratulated on their win.
Thorndyke was not happy that Herbie won but he ends up becoming a mechanic in the dealership that he used to own.
10. Do Jim and Carole get married at the end of the movie?

Answer: Yes

Of course they did, all thanks to Herbie. Herbie pulled up in front of the car dealership with a big bow on his hood. He was picking up Jim and Carole to take them on their honeymoon.
Tennessee asks them where they are going on their honeymoon as they were getting in the car but Jim told Tennessee that Herbie wouldn't tell them.
Jim gave Herbie the okay to drive away as he and Carole smiled lovingly at each other as Herbie was pulling away. Then as they were going down the street Jim and Carole waved out the back window.
Herbie honks and that's the end of the movie. Of course the movie had a happy ending.
I hope you liked my quiz. Did you find Herbie as loveable as I did? I hope so. Thanks for taking my quiz!
