Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the film opens, we meet Cedric 'Ceddie' Erroll and his mother, who has just lost her husband. Who plays the 9-year old lad Ceddie, a precocious and very well-behaved young man?

Answer: Freddie Bartholomew

Freddie Bartholomew was one of Hollywood's earliest bright young stars. Along with 'Little Lord Fauntleroy', he played in such films as 'Anna Karenina' and 'Captains Courageous'. He was born Frederick Llwellyn in Ireland in 1924, and was raised in England before heading to Hollywood in the early 1930s.
2. Ceddie has an incredible affection for his mother, to whom he is completely devoted and loving. What charming nickname does he have for his doting mother?

Answer: Dearest

Played by Dolores Costello, 'Dearest' is the sweet name used by Ceddie's uxorious father, and the name has been carried on by the equally devoted son.

The 'Goddess of the Silent Screen', Delores Costello was credited as Dolores Costello Barrymore in the film, as she was then married to screen icon John Barrymore. She was the grandmother of Drew Barrymore.
3. Ceddie is the son of a British gentleman, but the family lives in the United States. Where, particularly, do Ceddie and his mother live at the outset of the film?

Answer: Brooklyn

Despite the fact that they seem quite well off, Ceddie and his mother apparently live amongst hoi polloi of Brooklyn. Though the neighborhood they live in is populated by some rough-and-tumble characters, Ceddie is able to make some very close friends there.
4. Among Ceddie's closest friends in the neighborhood is a certain Mr. Hobbs, a very nice man who runs his own business. What sort of business does Hobbs manage?

Answer: Grocery store

Mr. Silas Hobbs is the local grocer, and a personal friend of Ceddie. He is staunchly American, and quite prejudiced against the British, especially those who are among the aristocracy. Before Ceddie leaves to Britain to be with his grandfather, he bestows upon Mr. Hobbs two very generous gifts, a new smoking pipe and a beautiful gold watch.
5. Ceddie's other closest friend in his neighborhood is a rumpled young bootblack by the name of Dick Tipton. What Hollywood icon plays the part of young Dick in this film?

Answer: Mickey Rooney

Mickey Rooney, who played in dozens of films as a child and young man, mostly in the roles of either 'Mickey McGuire' or 'Andy Hardy, is his usual charming self in 'Little Lord Fauntleroy'.
6. Ceddie and his mother are surprised to learn that Ceddie's uncle has passed away, leaving the boy's aristocratic grandfather with no heirs. Thus, Ceddie is next in line to inherit his grandfather's wealth and status. Who is the gentlemanly fellow from England that brings this exciting news to Ceddie?

Answer: Havisham

The kindly Havisham is played by British actor Henry Stephenson, who often appeared alongside Errol Flynn in that swashbuckling actors classic films (ex. 'Captain Blood').
7. Ceddie and his mother will both be allowed to move to England and live in his grandfather's mansion.

Answer: False

Sadly, Ceddie's grandfather has a terrible prejudice against Americans, and never acknowledged his son's marriage to the lovely Dearest. Hence, Dearest is forced to move into a nearby house while Ceddie moves in alone with his grandfather. Selflessly, Dearest never lets on to Ceddie why she must live separately from her loving son.
8. What is Ceddie's grandfather's title, a title which he shall inherit upon his grandfather's death?

Answer: Earl of Dorincourt

The Earl of Dorincourt, aka Ceddie's grandfather, is charmingly played by actor Sir C. Aubrey Smith in the film. Smith earned his knighthood in 1944, just four years before his death.

The Earl intends to see that Ceddie is raised in the proper English aristocratic fashion. However, the boy's disarming personality, compassion and unconditional love end up changing his grandfather!
9. Ceddie and his grandfather get along swimmingly, and the Earl feels very comfortable that his title and wealth will be passed down to the lad. However, trouble appears when another American woman appears, claiming to have mothered a child with the Earl's older son. What is the name of this claimant to the lordship?

Answer: Tom Tipton

Tom Tipton is played by child actor Jackie Searl, while his uncouth mother Minna Tipton is portrayed by Helen Flint. The mother's phony plot is uncovered by none other than Dick Tipton, who sees a picture of his relatives in the newspaper.
10. In the end, does Ceddie finally have legitimate claim as his grandfather's sole heir?

Answer: Yes

How could a story such as this end otherwise? Speaking of such, I strongly recommend this film, or the book by English-born American author Frances Hodgson Burnett, who is also famous for such titles as 'The Secret Garden' and 'The Little Princess'.
