Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Madeline?

Answer: Hatty Jones

Hatty Jones, born on July 21st, 1988, got the role of red-haired Madeline at ten-years-old. A London, England native, the young actress had to tint her blonde tresses red before filming, and took three months off of school to film.

"In the film, Hatty is like a Fifties Spice Girl, with Fifties girl power." said Hatty's drama teacher, Fiona Mogridge, on a website for Muswell Hill (a community in North London, where Hatty's drama school is located), "It's her first film, but she is a natural. The studio wanted someone brave, inquisitive, but cute and small for her age. She went to four auditions and a screen test. When it came down to the screen test it was between her and an American girl. I thought the American would get the part. Studios usually prefer them because America is the main market. But we were delighted when Hatty beat 4,000 other girls to the role."
2. What did Madeline name the chicken in the back of Helen's car?

Answer: Fred

"Fred the Chicken" was a rooster. He wound up on the table the night Madeline got home from the hospital. Madeline refused to eat Fred, deciding to be a vegetarian, causing nine other girls to decide to be vegetarians with her. The incident caused quite a bit of craziness at the table, and ended with Miss Clavel sending the newly turned vegetarians to bed with no supper.
3. Pepito had a motorcycle.

Answer: False

Pepito had a Vespa, which is different than a motorcycle. The Vespa was invented in 1946 in Italy by a man named Corradino D'Ascanio. He was told to invent a vehicle that both men and woman could drive, without getting their clothes dirty. He wound up inventing what is now know as the Vespa ("wasp" in Italian, due to the engine sounding like a wasp).
4. What name did Lady Covington carve on the baseboards?

Answer: Marie Gilbert

Lady Covington's mother ran the boarding school back when she was a child, so Lady Covington, of course, attended. She carved her name, which was Marie Gilbert at the time, on the baseboards in the girls' room. Madeline found this out during a secret late-night hospital visit, while Madeline was in the hospital recovering from getting her appendix removed.
5. What did the girls wear as uniforms?

Answer: Dresses

The girls' uniform by day consisted of bright blue dresses, red and blue striped ties, white socks, patented Mary-Jane shoes, plus bright blue coats and straw hats when they went outside. When it rained, they also sported bright yellow umbrellas. The only time you ever saw them wear anything different was at Pepito's birthday party.
6. Who played Miss Clavel?

Answer: Frances McDormand

Frances McDormand played Miss Clavel, a nun who managed the twelve girls. Miss Clavel loved all of the girls a lot, but seemed to have a special fondness for Madeline.

Born on June 27th, 1957, McDormand was a Pennsylvania native. She was in the films, "Burn After Reading" (2008) and "Something's Gotta Give" (2003), and in 1994, McDormand adopted a son, Pedro, from Paraguay.
7. What time does Miss Clavel say that her students go to sleep?

Answer: 9 P.M.

Lord Covington called the students "little brats", after Madeline accidentally addressed him as "Lord CooCoo-Face" in front of him. Miss Clavel responded, quite defensively "They are not brats, Lord Covington - they are young ladies. They respect their elders from seven AM when they wake up until nine PM in the evening when they go to sleep."
8. Where did Madeline meet Genevieve?

Answer: At the river Seine

Madeline stood on the edge of a bridge, to be seen amongst the other girls while making a speech to them, about how Pepito was "a bad hat". In her excitement, she fell off the bridge and nearly drowned, but was rescued by the white lab she named Genevieve (played by Nanny the Dog).

She kept Genevieve hidden at the school before showing Miss Clavel, who made Madeline keep it in a shed out back, since there was a strict rule in the school of "no pets allowed".
9. Who kidnapped Madeline?

Answer: Pepito's tutor

Leopold, Pepito's tutor, kidnapped Pepito with intent of getting ransom money. Madeline saw him and began yelling at Leopold to stop, so in order to get away with his plan, Leopold had to kidnap her too. Soon though, Madeline and Pepito were able to escape on a motorcycle, hidden in the trailer that they were tied up in. Pepito had his doubts about riding the motorcycle, since he had never ridden one before, only his Vespa, but he eventually found the courage to.
10. What song played at the end of the movie, before the credits?

Answer: What a Wonderful World

At the end of the film, Lord Covington decided not to sell the school. Everything at the school was happy and rosy again, making it a "happily ever after".

Louis Armstrong recorded the song in 1958. Whilst it wasn't such a hit in the United States, it was in the United Kingdom, becoming the biggest-selling hit of 1968 in that country. That made Louis Armstrong the oldest man to top the billboard charts, at 66 years and 10 months old.
