The action of "The Tomorrow War" starts in 2022 at a seemingly normal house party. In the beginning sequence Dan's daughter Muri is seen watching a soccer match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar between Brazil and an unidentified opponent. While on a breakaway toward the opponent's goal play is interrupted when soldiers land on the pitch and give an eerie warning about a war in the future against non-humans.

The whitespikes are huge, fast, powerful and cooperative lifeforms. A deployment survivor describes the worst part about them as a clicking noise that they make that functions as an ominous harbinger of death. They have long arm-like appendages that can unleash deadly spikes at high speeds at their prey and razor sharp teeth.

At first the deployments were comprised of solely active military personnel but eventually an international draft of civilians was implemented as more soldiers were needed. Riots and anti-war demonstrations are prevalent because many argue that the war is the future's problem and people of the present should not be fighting it.

Answer: High school biology teacher

Prior to working as a biology teacher Dan served two tours in the Iraq War as a First Sergeant of the United States Army Special Forces (Green Berets). While teaching his biology class his students are sullen and not paying attention to his lecture on photosynthesis.

They tell him that the lesson doesn't matter since it is projected the aliens will win the war and humanity will be wiped out. Dan counters that it will be science and innovation that wins the Tomorrow War and that they must all stay vigilant.

Answer: Research

Dan gets assigned to the R-Force (Research) unit and quickly befriends a fellow science geek named Charlie who has no military experience. They both notice that everyone in their unit is at least 40 years old and they are informed that their task is to perform research and add knowledge.

However, they are deployed early as the last remaining research facility in the city of Miami in the year 2051 (the year they are sent to) is under attack by the whitespikes.

The initial mission for Dan's team is changed to a rescue and retrieve supplies mission. On their way out of the research facility the whitespikes attack Dan's team. Dorian had done two prior tours in the Tomorrow War and after shooting the whitespike that was fighting Dan he told the team to aim for their bellies as it is one of their weak points.

In their orientation on Earth in 2022 the team was informed that the neck is also a weak spot on the whitespikes.

Answer: It is his daughter.

In the year 2022 Dan's daughter Muri is a precocious nine year old child but in 2051 when he is sent into the Tomorrow War she is a military colonel with a PhD in biology. Weirdly, she is also about the same age as him in spite of being his daughter since he hasn't aged into 2051 like she has.

She tells him that he is not there to reminisce with her about their former life and she tells him that the last time that she saw him was when he died in 2030.

Answer: They were rarer and more resitant to toxins than males.

After the fighting in Miami the surviving members of Dan's team wake up in the Dominican Republic. There they meet up with Colonel Muri Forester and are informed that their mission is to capture a female whitespike so that it can be analyzed to determine what toxins its body is vulnerable to.

The females are rare and typically guarded by the numerous male whitespikes whose bodies are more easily damaged by potent toxins.

Answer: Paektu (Changbai)

When Dan comes back from his deployment it is known that the first whitespike encounter is in northern Russia in 2048. Dan, Charlie and Dorian seek the help of one of Dan's students who is an expert in volcanoes and he determines that the 946 eruption of Changbai was powerful enough to leave ash in northern Russia. This leads them to the realization that the whitespikes have been on Earth the whole time but that they were trapped under ice until 2048 when the glacier they were under thawed out.

The 946 eruption of Paektu (Korean name, Changbai is the Chinese name) Mountain was so powerful that it created a cratered lake called Heaven Lake and it ejected a two inch ashfall over an area of 1,500,000 sq km (580,000 sq mi).

Answer: His father, James

To test out the toxin Dan and his team inject some of the dormant whitespikes that are unhatched inside sack-like structures. These individuals die but they end up waking the others that did not get the toxin. Dan, Charlie and his father, James, manage to escape but Dorian is trapped on the ship with a horde of whitespikes. Knowing that he has cancer and only has six months to live he detonates a bomb on the ship causing a massive explosion killing all but the queen of the whitespikes that escapes. Dan and his father James track down the queen and eventually kill her through gunfire, slice wounds and the toxin.
