Billboard number one, July 11, 1960. The group was named after an intersection in L.A. The singer was actually Gary Paxton who was Flip in the group Skip and Flip.
2. 1961 produced the only Top 40 hit for this Queens, New York doo-wop group. The song was "Heart and Soul". The group was?

Answer: The Cleftones

Billboard number 18, June 19, 1961. Actually The Cleftones WERE The Silvertones in 1955 when they formed, and actually had a few hits. They changed some personnel in 1961, and that's when they made their only Top 40 appearance with this song.
3. This future television actress had her only Top 40 hit in 1962 with "Love Letters".

Answer: Ketty Lester

Billboard number five April 14, 1962. Ms. Lester went on to appear in the soap opera "Days Of Our Lives" as Helen Grant, as well as a recurring role in "Little House On The Prairie", as Hester-Sue Terhune.

Billboard Number One, June 15, 1963. The song was sung entirely in Japanese and topped the charts for three weeks. It was re-recorded in English in 1981 by the group "A Taste Of Honey", and made it all the way to Number 3. Sakamoto tragically died in a plane crash in 1985.

Billboard number 6, May 30, 1964. Originally from Detroit Michigan, they could not parlay the success of this song into a long career. Their highest charting hit after this was a song called "Poor Man's Son" which topped out at number 55. The group still performs on the oldies circuits today.

Answer: Jewel Akens

Billboard number three, March 20, 1965. He started recording in 1960 with Eddie Daniels, as Jewel and Eddie, with limited success. Later in the 60s after this song hit, he toured with The Monkees. Part of his show was a tribute to the man he called his mentor....Sam Cooke.

Billboard number five, February 5, 1966. They never charted into the Top 40 again as the T-Bones but...they came back in the 70s as Hamilton, Joe, Frank and Reynolds and scored a number three hit with "Don't Pull Your Love" in 1971.

Answer: Paul Mauriat

Billboard Number One, Feb 10, 1968. Mauriat was born in 1925 in Marseilles France, and conducted his own band as far back as World War II. Interestingly, a song he co-wrote called "Chariot" was an international hit. You may have heard of it under the title it was recorded under in the US.

The song was translated to "I Will Follow Him" and recorded by Little Peggy March. Mauriat passed away in 2006.
10. 1969 saw a Jamaican born reggae style singer hit the charts with "The Israelites" His name and group were...

Answer: Desmond Dekker and The Aces

Billboard Number nine, June 28, 1969. Dekker could never duplicate his success again in the U.S. He moved to London in the 70s. He passed away of a heart attack in 2006.
