July 9, 1995 was the last show that The Grateful Dead ever did because Jerry Garcia died shortly after. It was at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois and they performed an encore in which first Jerry sang his swan song "Black Muddy River" then the last song, "Box of Rain" wrapped up the encore.

The band considered all these other names before Jerry Garcia spotted "grateful dead" while flipping through a dictionary at Phil Lesh's apartment. The other band memebers really did not like the name at first, but the name stuck.

Pigpen was pretty much the leader of the band up until his death on March 8th, 1973. He died of massive internal bleeding due to several years of drinking.

Phil Lesh had never played the bass in his life until he joined the band so he had to learn as he went. He was an avid avante-garde classical and jazz musician and played the trumpet before he joined.
