Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In his hit "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" what other two place names are mentioned?

Answer: Albuquerque and Oklahoma

This is one of several Glen Campbell hits written by Jimmy Webb. It reached number two on the Billboard country charts, but only number 26 on their Top 40 chart in early 1968.
2. Which of Glen's hits served as the theme song for his popular TV show?

Answer: Gentle On My Mind

"The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" began as a summer replacement show for "The Smothers Brothers Show", but became a hit show in its own right so it was brought back to the regular CBS schedule. "Gentle On My Mind" was written by the late John Hartford who, along with Steve Martin, was a writer for the "Smothers Brothers" show.
3. In the song "Rhinestone Cowboy" Glen says that he "knows every crack on these dirty sidewalks of"....where?

Answer: Broadway

After a three year drought without a Top 40 hit for Glen on the Billboard charts, "Rhinestone Cowboy" reached number one on both the country and Top 40 charts in the summer of 1975.
4. One of Glen's later hits was a remake of "It's Just A Matter of Time". What R&B great had the original hit in 1959?

Answer: Brook Benton

"It's Just A Matter of Time" was Brook Benton's first top ten hit, peaking at number three on the Billboard charts. Glen's version peaked at number seven on the country charts in 1985. Randy Travis covered the song in 1989 and took it all the way to number one on the country charts.
5. Another song Glen covered that was both a pop and country hit was "It's Only Make Believe". What country superstar had the original hit in 1958?

Answer: Conway Twitty

"It's Only Make Believe" was Conway Twitty's first hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Pop charts in 1958. Oddly, it didn't even make the country charts. But Glen's version reached number three on the country chart and number ten on the Top 40 chart in September of 1970.
6. In 1969 Glen appeared in a movie with John Wayne and also sang the title song. What was the movie?

Answer: True Grit

The song was written by Elmer Bernstein and Don Black and was nominated for Best Song at the Academy Awards as well as the Golden Globes. Glen's role, a Texas Ranger named Le Bouef, was originally offered to Elvis Presley but Elvis's manager Colonel Tom Parker demanded top billing for his client over John Wayne and the role went to Glen.

The movie was remade in 2010 with Jeff Bridges in the lead role and Matt Damon as Le Boeuf.
7. Here's another "Rhinestone Cowboy" question: According to the song, what happens to "nice guys"?

Answer: They get washed away like the snow and the rain

8. One of my favorite early hits by Glen was "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife". According to the song what does she stare at when she looks in the mirror?

Answer: Bobbie Gentry

Both singles by Glen and Bobbie were top ten country hits and were also top 30 hits on the Billboard pop charts. In 1971 Glen and Anne Murray did do a duet together--a mashup of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" and "I Say A Little Prayer".
10. In Glen's hit "Wichita Lineman" who is he a lineman for?

Answer: The county
