Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One early cow song is the "Cow Cow Boogie" (1942) which was sung by which legendary blues singer for the Abbott and Costello film "Ride 'Em Cowboy" (1942)?

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

"Cow Cow Boogie" was written by Benny Carter and Gene De Paul for the 1942 film "Ride 'Em Cowboy". Fitzgerald had a role in the film, as Ruby. She sings "A Tisket A Tasket" (one of her biggest hits) but her singing of "Cow Cow Boogie" was cut from the film.

Ella Mae Morse made a recording of the song with Freddie Slack and his Orchestra, and it became the first big hit for Capitol Records. Fitzgerald would release a version of the song with The Ink Spots in November 1943, and it became a top 10 hit.

"Ride Em Cowboy" features Abbott and Costello as vendors who wind up at a dude ranch out west. It was their sixth film, and was one of the bigger hits of 1942.

Other artists who have covered the song include Frankie Laine (1961) and The Judds (1987).
2. "Milk Cow Blues" has been covered by many artists over the years. When did Kokomo Arnold first record it?

Answer: 1934

Arnold wrote and recorded his version in 1934. In the decades since, many artists have recorded their own version of the song. In 1941, Johnnie Lee Mills covered the song. In 1954, Elvis Presley did a rockabilly version called "Milkcow Blues Boogie." Rock groups to cover it include The Kinks and Aerosmith. And Willie Nelson released an album with the title in 2000.
3. What country music star got into some trouble over his controversial song "Brown Chicken, Brown Cow" (2011)?

Answer: Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins released "Brown Chicken, Brown Cow" in January 2011 as part of his album "Cowboy's Back in Town." The song is about a farm couple named Bobby Joe and Betty, who neglect their farm chores in order to have sex.
The video features puppets, including a cow and pig puppet.

The title of the song is an innuendo off the phrase "boom chicka pow pow" which is used as a common metaphor for music in pornographic films. The songs lyrics and accompanying video proved highly controversial, and it was eventually pulled off the radio. It did reach as high as number 39 on the Billboard Hot Country Song charts.

Adkins, a native of Louisiana, began his music career in 1996. He released about a dozen albums over the next 20 years, almost all of them certified either gold or platinum. He has won several CMT Awards, and been nominated for four Grammy Awards. Adkins has made a variety of appearances in film and television, including winning on "Celebrity Apprentice" in 2013.
4. In the Carly Simon song "Cow Town", what state does Simone move to?

Answer: Texas

"Cow Town" is about a French girl who falls in love with a Texas millionaire, only to discover life in America is not as glamorous as she had dreamed of. Simone and Donald fly to Houston and are married in Dripping Springs.

Carly Simon released "Cow Town" on her album "Another Passenger" (1976). She began her solo music career in 1970 and her first big hit was "Anticipation" in 1971. Simon's biggest hit was the classic song "You're So Vain" (1972). She also recorded the Bond theme "Nobody Does It Better" for "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977).
5. What novelty song writer released the parody songs "Who Let the Cows Out?" and "How Do You Milk a Cow?"

Answer: Cledus T Judd

Cledus T Judd is known as the "Al Yankovich of Country Music." He released eleven albums between 1995 and 2015. His albums include "Just Another Day in Parodies" (2000) and "Bipolar and Proud" (2004). He took a break from show business in 2015, but returned in 2018.

"Who Let the Cows Out?" is a parody of the 2000 Baha Men hit "Who Let the Dogs Out?" and "How Do You Milk a Cow?" is a parody of the Toby Keith song "How Do You Like Me Now" (1999).
6. What is NOT one of the things that happens to the cow in the Adam Sandler comedy song "Adventures of the Cow"?

Answer: Abducted by extra-terrestrials

Sandler's routine on an unfortunate cow is part of his album "What The Hell Happened to Me?" (1996). The album actually sold two million copies, largely based on the popularity of "The Chanukah Song."

In the routine, the cow is hit by a baseball, sky dives out of an airplane, has her order messed up at a drive thru restaurant, drowns in a swimming pool, gets thrown out of a strip club, is cheated in a tennis match, receives a prank phone call, and finally has revenge on a farmer by driving over him with a car. There is no mention of extra-terrestrials in the song, which is odd, since cattle mutilations by aliens are a major threat for livestock.
7. In the Dana Lyons song "Cows with Guns", what fast food chain is the target of the cows wrath?

Answer: McDonald's

The rogue cows burn down McDonald's - twelve of them as a matter of fact. They also burn down a slaughterhouse, destroy sixty police cars and tip over milk trucks. The chorus of the song is "We will fight for bovine freedom/ And hold our large heads high/ We will run free with the Buffalo, or die/ Cows with guns."

Dana Lyons is a folk singer from Bellingham, Washington. While "Cows with Guns" is unquestionably his biggest hit, he has written many other folk songs, often focusing on the environment and social justice issues.
8. What Australian children's entertainers gave us the 1995 song "I'm A Cow?"

Answer: The Wiggles

The Wiggles are a group of children's entertainers based in Sydney. From 1991 to 2012, the group consisted of Anthony Field, Murray Cook, Jeff Fatt and Greg Page (2006) or Sam Moran (2006-2012). They have released several dozen albums, done concerts, music videos and a television program over their career. The group has won fourteen Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards (the Australian Grammy) for best children's album.

The song, like most of the Wiggles material, is very short, as it is intended for the short attention spans of small children.
9. What city did the noise rock band The Cows call home?

Answer: Minneapolis

The Cows were a noise rock band that started in Minneapolis in 1987 and which lasted until 1998. The band was formed by Kevin Rutmanis (bass) and his younger brother Sandris (drums), with Thor Eisentrager on guitar and Norm Rogers as lead vocalist.

The Cows was known for their crude, other outrageous behavior on stage. They did record eight albums, most of them with Amphetamine Reptile Records.

The Cows are recognized for their influence on the Minneapolis music scene with a star on the wall at the First Avenue Nightclub.
10. What is the name of the cow in the Venerea song "Dirty Old Brown Jersey Cow"?

Answer: Rosabella

Rosabella is the name of the depressed Jersey cow. She is bored and in a rut, which is probably not unusual for a cow.

"Dirty Old Brown Jersey Cow" is on Venerea's 1997 album "Both Ends Burning." Venerea is a punk rock band from Malmo, Sweden which formed in 1991.
