quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Core members of this German avant-garde 1970's band included Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebzeit and Irmin Schmidt. Name the band.

Answer: Can

Can's music had more in common with contemporary classic composition than it did with most rock of its era (1968-1978), but it's well worth checking out if you're a bit adventurous.
2. This Australian ex-patriot was an original member of early RIO pioneers Soft Machine. He was stranded in France due to visa problems and later founded one of the most influental space rock bands. Name him.

Answer: Daevid Allen

Allen's Gong (after countless mutations) is still "flying high" after 30 plus years.
3. This Virginia-based prog legend made a minor blip on the commercial music radar when they signed an eight record deal with Arista in the late 70's. Alas, the record company didn't have a clue as how to market them, so the band quietly folded in 1979. Who were they?

Answer: Happy the Man

Happy the Man produced just a handful of progressive gems in the late 1970's and were considered by Peter Gabriel to become his first performing band to coincide with his first solo LP. They have recently reformed and released a new album.
4. French prog rockers, Ange, continue after more than thirty-five years of creating the most memorable Franco-Phonic rock on the planet. Who has appeared on every Ange release and is the creative force behind the band?

Answer: Christian DeCamps

Sadly, due to recording almost exclusively in their native tongue, Ange has never received the attention that their UK contemporaries (ELP, Moodies, Genesis, King Crimson, et al.) did. Very theatrical, at times caustic and never boring, Christian, Tristian (his son) and company continue to rock after debuting live on 31 January, 1970.
5. This prog band's original guitar player was Anthony (Ant) Phillips. Name the band.

Answer: Genesis

Phillips formed Genesis with Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Peter Gabriel while attending Charterhouse School. He was replaced by Steve Hackett prior to the recording of "Nursery Cryme".
6. Vocalist Bryan Ferry originally auditioned for this seminal prog rock band, before the formation of Roxy Music.

Answer: King Crimson

Crimson leader Robert Fripp felt Byron Ferrari's (Ferry's real name) was not suited to replace Greg Lake, but found his voice interesting and put him in contact with Crimson's management at the time, EG. He subsequently met Brian Eno, and Roxy Music was formed in 1971.
7. This French iconoclastic band, lead by Christian Vander, has been in existence since the late 60's. Vander created a "language" that the band's vocalists use called Kobian. Name the band.

Answer: Magma

Almost indescribable, Magma must be heard to be believed. Imagine blues shouting, Coltrane-infused jazz, Stravinsky and massive percussion mixed in a boiling cauldron, then shot at a black canvas with a cannon...Sorry, that's the best verbal comparison I can make...
8. What art rock giant did one-hit pop group did Hotlegs morph into; known for acerbic lyrics, fabulous musical performances, pristine studio production, and extremely clever artwork?

Answer: 10cc

Jonathan King (also of Genesis fame) came up with the name (something to do with male fertility...) and signed 10cc to his record label. Hotlegs' hit was called Neanderthal Man. Lol Creme and Kevin Godley met in art school. They were joined by Eric Stewart from Wayne Fontana and the Mind Benders in 1970 to form Hotlegs. Graham Gouldman wrote hits for the Hollies, Herman's Hermits's, and "For Your Love" for the Yardbirds.

He joined the other three in 1972 during a session with Neil Sedaka!
9. Who played violin on the Who's classic "Baba O'Reilly"?

Answer: Dave Arbus

Originally forming East of Eden in 1967, Dave Arbus, a superb multi- instumentalist (flute, sax and trumpet also) also had Canterbury ties. He had guested with Caravan in 1969, met Richard Sinclair and later played with the Coxhill-Sinclair Band and Sinclair and the South (with Bill Bruford).
10. Simon House appeared on the 1978 David Bowie tour as violinist. He had been a member of all of the following groups except for one. Name it.

Answer: Circus

Circus featured Mel Collins on saxophone prior to his tenure with King Crimson and Camel.
11. What famous guitar player spent time with Procol Harum prior to going solo and producing a number of successful albums light years away from the Procol Harum sound?

Answer: Robin Trower

Trower's 70's classics were bluesy and Jimi Hendrix-like at times, bearing little in common to his days with Gary Brooker and co. Interestingly, he produced Bryan Ferry's "Taxi" and "Mamouna" albums. He joined Bryan on stage at the Hammersmith shows of the "Mamouna" tour for 'The 39 Steps' and joined the band in full for the 1995 dates.
12. What progressive music "side project" includes members of Flower Kings, Marillion, Dream Theater and Spock's Beard?

Answer: Transatlantic

Since keyboardist/vocalist Neal Morse left Spock's Beard to pursue a career in Contemporary Christian Music, Transatlantic is some what in "limbo."
13. What is the one word, geographic name of the early 80's art rock band that Pocupine Tree's keyboardist Richard Barbieri was a member of?

Answer: Japan

David Sylvian, Steve Jansen, Mick Karn and Barbieri played thier first "paying" gig at a South London college in June 1974. Their last show was in December 1982 in Nagoya, Japan and they disbanded shortly thereafter.
14. What is the one word name of the graphic design studio well known for creative photographic-based album and CD covers for prog artists such as Yes, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, the Alan Parsons Project, Genesis, Brand X, and ELP formed in 1968?

Answer: Hipgnosis

Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell formed the company in 1968. Thorgerson later did six music videos for the 1994 Pink Floyd "Pulse" tour. Peter Christopherson joined the firm in 1974 as an employee, then became a partner. The team split up in 1983. Thorgerson remains the visual consultant for Pink Floyd art and design.
15. Prog rockers Focus had a number of albums but only one hit. In 1973, "Hocus Pocus", a quirky instrumental piece with flute and vocal pyrotechnics by Tjs Van Leer, was number 9 for the month of March. Where was Focus from?

Answer: Holland

In July of 73, Focus had another top 100 hit with the instrumental "Sylvia", peaking at number 89. "Hocus Pocus" may be the only hit rock single to feature yodeling!
