Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The man known as Slash was not, obviously, born with the name Slash. What is his birth name?

Answer: Saul Hudson

Born July 23, 1965 to a Jewish English father and an African-American mother, Slash was introduced to show business at an early age, as both his parents worked in the business. His mother was a costume designer to David Bowie, and his father was an artist, who contributed his work to artists such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.
2. In what country was Slash born?

Answer: England

Slash was born in Hampstead, London, a middle-class suburb of the city, and was raised in Stoke-on-Trent. In the mid-1970s, when he was 11, he moved to Los Angeles, CA with his parents. After his parents separated, he lived in LA with his mother.
3. What year did Slash and Axl Rose first meet?

Answer: 1984

The two were introduced after a show in which Slash's band had opened for the Christian metal band Stryper. The two were introduced to each other by a mutual friend, and they became friends. Several months later, both Slash and Steve Adler were asked to join the newly revamped Guns N' Roses, joining Axl Rose, Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin.
4. In what year did Slash remark that Guns N' Roses seemed like a "catalyst for controversy"?

Answer: 1988

Most of Guns N' Roses classic material, like "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child o' Mine", were written during 1985 and 1986, when they were touring bars and clubs. The band even had to cancel a tour with Iron Maiden, as various members of the band were otherwise engaged.

For example, Saul had been taken to Hawaii to help to try and kick his drug habit, while Rose was spending time in a Los Angeles hospital after assaulting a police officer.
5. What did Slash focus on after Guns N' Roses disbanded?

Answer: Slash's Snakepit

The Snakepit was a side-project which Saul had been working on during the times that Guns N' Roses were on hiatus. After Guns N' Roses, The Snakepit became Saul's main project, but disbanded after some tours. However, in 2001, Slahs's Snakepit was reformed, although Slash's name only appeared on the band name after pressure from their producers, as they thought his name would help sell the band.

The band promoted the album "Ain't Life Grand", which managed to reach platinum on the charts.
6. What began life as "The Project"?

Answer: Velvet Revolver

Velvet Revolver is a supergroup formed in 2002, that is made up of Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Dave Kushner of Wasted Youth. The hard rock band won a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Hard Rock Performance.
7. What award did Slash recieve in the 2005 Esky Music Awards in Esquire magazine?

Answer: Best Guitarist

Upon accepting the award, Saul thanked his parents, his wife and Robert Wolin, who got Saul to switch from bass to lead. This acceptance was quite calm, in contrast to a speech given in 1990 when Slash had stumbled onstage, drunk, holding drinks and smoking a cigarette. Within a few minutes of his speech he had managed to swear twice and the camera and microphone had to be moved.
8. Slash only uses what brand of amps onstage?

Answer: Marshall

Slash made history with Marshall by being the very first guitarist to have a Marshall signature amp made for him. Slash has also used Vox and Fender amps, albeit not onstage. During his time with Velvet Revolver, Slash used a Vox AC30 amp when recording their debut album "Contraband" and also used Fender amps on that album.
9. In what year was "Slash", Slash's autobiography, published?

Answer: 2007

The autobiography was published on October 30th, and was co-written by Slash and Anthony Bozza, who wrote in "Rolling Stone" magazine, and has written biographies of Eminem, Tommy Lee of Motley Crue and is currently writing about Artie Lange, one of the original actors on MADtv. Slash has also contributed to Nikki Sixx's "The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of A Shattered Rock Star" which was also published in 2007.
10. Slash was lead guitarist for Guns N' Roses from 1985 - 1996, but who succeeded him after he left?

Answer: Robin Finck

Tracii Guns (born Tracy Ulrich) was the original guitarist for Guns N' Roses, who formed the band Brides of Destruction. Robin Finck, the current lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses and formerly of Nine Inch Nails, shares his playing with Ron Thal. Thal joined the band in 2006.
