Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Part of becoming famous while being terrible is knowing how to predict internet trends ahead of time. Sometimes even thirty years ahead of time! That's what one man did with his song "Trololo," a parody of the Russian folk song, "I Am Glad, 'Cause I'm Finally Returning Back Home." Who was this man?

Answer: Eduard Khil

Eduard Khil correctly predicted trolling, the act of intentionally annoying people over the internet, would become popular. With his song "Trololo", he was set for success. His song became a viral video on YouTube in 2010, and his career was revitalized. Sadly, he passed away in 2012, but his legacy lives on today.
2. In 1987, Rick Astley released his song "Never Gonna Give You Up," a song which, decades later, would become his quintessential single. The act of tricking someone into clicking a link to this song is known by what name?

Answer: Rickrolling

Rickrolling was first used in May of 2007. In 2008, it became a well-known element of pop culture. Rickrolling has been used in many places, including during basketball games at Eastern Washington University and even in the Oregon House of Representatives. Astley, who had retired in the 1990s, had his career revitalized after Rickrolling became common.

Despite the popularity, in the Rickrolling trend's first seven years, Astley only made 12 dollars from the views on his YouTube video.
3. A great way to become famous is to develop something that is new at the time. In this case, it's the online meme. What Canadian college student did that in 2000 with her song "Hamster Dance"?

Answer: Deidre LaCarte

LaCarte created the homepage in 1998 as a tribute to her hamster. Although traffic was slow at first, it eventually sped up due in part to its inclusion in commercials, emails, and blogs. In 2000, it started entering some music charts and became a moderate hit in Canada (and a pretty big hit in Australia and the UK).
4. Being a novelty artist, it can help to have an extremely low voice. Tay Zonday did that with his song about the rain. What flavor was the rain he was talking about?

Answer: Chocolate

"Chocolate Rain" was first placed on YouTube in April 2007 and it has since garnered tens of millions of views. The artist himself, Tay Zonday, has had a lot of minor achievements in the music world. He was part of Weezer's music video for "Pork and Beans".

After his success with "Chocolate Rain", he made a cover for "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen, and it was ranked by Billboard as one of the top ten covers of that song.
5. Singing about your favorite song of the week can bring successes and failures. What day of the week was Rebecca Black singing about in March 2011, when she became known across the internet?

Answer: Friday

Although not a success on the Billboard Hot 100, "Friday" received huge amounts of success on YouTube, quickly garnering hundreds of millions of views. Due to a legal battle, the music video was taken down in June 2011. Despite that, the video was placed on YouTube again in September 2011, and quickly regained 100 million of its views. Unfortunately the song caused trouble for Rebecca Black with death threats forcing her to change schools.

As a follow up, she released a new single, "Saturday", in 2013.
6. To gain notoriety under both public scrutiny and the law, one needs to go no further than sampling from extremely obscure laws. Baauer did that with his "shaky" song released in 2012, but what neighborhood did this song come from?

Answer: Harlem

"Harlem Shake" was released in May 2012, though it did not become popular until early 2013. It is known for the extremely erratic dances that people posted to YouTube. "Harlem Shake" was a huge Billboard success, leading the Hot 100 for 5 weeks and finishing 4th on the year end chart for 2013. Unfortunately not all was good news for Baauer, as he ended up in legal trouble for not clearing samples he used for the song.

His lawyers negotiated with the producers of the songs he samples, but he failed to make money off of the song due to the fees and money he was sued for.
7. Writing songs in another language can be confusing to some audiences, but for PSY, it helped catapult him to mainstream popularity with his song "Gangnam Style". What foreign language is "Gangnam Style" performed in?

Answer: Korean

"Gangnam Style" was a huge success on the Billboard charts, peaking at number two on the Hot 100 for seven straight weeks, and each of those weeks, finishing second only to Maroon 5's "One More Night." Its popularity was spread out across 2012 and 2013, so it was listed on both year-end charts, 47th for 2012 and 55th for 2013.

It became the first-ever song to reach one billion views, and the only song until Justin Bieber's song "Baby" did so in February 2014.
8. Combining a public service announcement with a song will bring popularity in ways you'd never expect it. It gave moderate success to the Australian subway company Metro Trains when they produced "Dumb Ways To Die" in late 2012. In what Australian city was the song supposed to promote train safety?

Answer: Melbourne

"Dumb Ways to Die" lists several silly ways one could kill oneself, including "Inviting a psycho-killer inside" and "Getting your toast out with a fork." At the end of the song, it talks about why it's a bad idea to fool around near oncoming trains. After the song's release, the number of near-accidents in the Melbourne Subway significantly declined.
9. A good way to have a breakthrough is to release your song without any attempt to become famous outside of your home country. Although a foreign song, Ylvis's animal-tinged single paved their way for an international breakthrough. What animal is the song dedicated to?

Answer: Fox

"The Fox" was released in September 2013, and became a hit by the end of the month. In subsequent months, it charted high on the Billboard Hot 100, seeing its peak at number six and ending at number seventy-three on the Year-End Chart for 2013. In Norway, the country where the band comes from, the song peaked in the number one spot.
10. Building off existing trends is a great way to become popular. "#Selfie" was a viral internet hit based on a popular social activity. The group who created the song derives their name from what unhealthy activity?

Answer: Chain Smoking

The Chainsmokers were created in 2012 by Andrew Taggart and Alex Paul. In January 2014, they released their third single, "#Selfie", which quickly rose on the Billboard Hot 100 due to its large number of streams over the internet. It spent two weeks as the number one Dance/Electronic Single on the Billboard Charts in March and April of 2014.
