Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 10th May 1960 : the Beatles (who were not called the Beatles yet but The Silver Beetles) had an audition at the Wyvern Social Club in Liverpool before Londoner manager Larry Parnes who was looking for a group to back one of his singers (Billy Fury) . Their new drummer (Tommy Moore) was late so they asked Cass And Cassanovas' drummer if he could fill in for Moore . Which was his name ?

Answer: Johnny Hutchinson

The Beatles passed the audition but they were to back Johnny Gentle on a tour of Scotland (from 20th to 28th May 1960) . It was their first proper engagement as professionals and they decided to adopt stage names (except Tommy Moore): John Lennon became Long John Silver (though some fans deny it, but McCartney in the Anthology DVD declares that John was Long John), Paul McCartney was Paul Ramon (because it sounded French but as far as I'm concerned it sounds more Spanish), George Harrison would be Carl Harrison (after Carl Perkins) and Stuart Sutcliffe was known as Stu De Stael ( in reference to Nicholas De Stael the Russian painter).
2. May 1961 : the Beatles were in Hamburg, Germany playing at the Top Ten Club. Sometimes they would back a British singer named Tony Sheridan. German producer Bert Kaempfaert heard of Tony Sheridan and the Beatles through a German rock'n'roll singer (who would to join them on stage sometimes). What was this German singer called?

Answer: Tommy Kent

Tommy Kent (Guntram Kühbeck was his birth name) once brought Kaempfaert to the Top Ten so that he may see Tony Sheridan. Kaempfaert offered Sheridan the chance to record an album. Sheridan said yes and he asked the Beatles to back him . That's how they recorded seven songs (including Lennon-Harrison's "Cry For A Shadow") on 22nd and 23rd June 1961 as The Beat Brothers.

This was their very first professionnal recording session.
3. 28th September 1962: The Beatles were in a boat on a river (doesn't it sound familiar?). This was the fourth and final performance aboard a Mersey vessel (the three preceding ones having taken place during the summers of 1961 and 1962) . What was the name of this boat ?

Answer: MV Royal Iris

Those concerts (called "Riverboat Shuffles") were presented by the Cavern Club owner Ray McFall . Not only The Beatles were booked, but also artists like Acker Bilk and Johnny Kidd and the Pirates.
4. 24th May 1963 : The Beatles were recording their first own BBC radio show (called "Pop Go The Beatles"). Where did this event take place?

Answer: Aeolian Hall (London)

Only four shows were scheduled but due to the increasing success of the Beatles, a further eleven were recorded (the last one having been on 3rd September 1963 for a broadcast on 24th September 1963).
5. 29th January 1964 : During their concert season at the Paris Olympia in France, the Beatles were asked by Electrola Gesellshaft (EMI West German branch) to record German versions of "She Loves You" and of "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Producer George Martin brought a German translator in to coach them . Which was his name ?

Answer: Otto Demmlar

The Beatles didn't like those versions. They thought (rightly so) that they could sell records in English all over the world and they were proved to be right, weren't they ?
6. 13th December 1965 : The Beatles had an appointment with their manager Brian Epstein to discuss the possibility of making a third film (after "A Hard Day's Night" in 1964 and "Help" in 1965). Epstein had acquired the rights of a novel by Richard Condon. What was the title of this novel?

Answer: A Talent For Loving

The Beatles were not keen on acting in another film, having been slightly disappointed by "Help" (they had the feeling that they had been guest stars in their own movie), so they rejected it . "A Talent For Loving" was released in 1969 with Richard Widmark as main character . Imagine the Beatles in a Western : it could have been fun .
7. 3rd July 1966 : The Beatles were landing at Manila airport . They came to the Philippines to perform two concerts during their last world tour . As soon as they landed they were driven to a yacht (nobody never really understood why). Who did this yacht belong to ?

Answer: Don Manolo Elizalde

He was a local businessman (his name sounded like a godfather's, don't you think so ?). They were nearly killed at the airport on the way back to England because they had not gone to first lady Imelda Marcos' reception. She therefore felt humiliated. Actually nobody ever told them that they were invited. Finally they made it to the plane and they never were to fly back to the Philippines.
8. 17th February 1967 : the Beatles 14th single was released . It was a double A sided one (with "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane"). For the first time since "Love Me Do" (their first single, released on 5th October 1962) the single did not reach number one in the British charts . Which song reached the top in February 1967 ?

Answer: "Release Me" by Engelbert Humperdinck

It was such a relief (curiously) not to be number one , having been under pressure for all those years . But the relief was of short duration because their next single ("All You Need Is Love") reached of course the top and so on .
9. February 1968 : The Beatles were in Rishikesh India for a transcendental meditation camp. They had been invited by an Indian guru (the Maharishi) whom they had met in London the previous summer. What was the Maharishi's birth name ?

Answer: Mahesh Prasad Varma

The sojourn to Rishikesh didn't go as well as expected . Ringo said it was like a Butlin's camp and he stayed just 11 days, Paul stayed a little over a month saying he could meditate in London as well and John as well as George left after two months . John was angry about Maharishi, having heard (probably through "Magic Alex" who felt jealous about the increasing influence that Maharishi had on John) that he had hit on Mia Farrow and other girls . So John asked Maharishi if it was true and facing Maharishi's incomprehension he decided to leave.

At New-Dehli airport he wrote a song called "Maharishi". This song was to be known later as "Sexy Sadie" .
10. 31st October 1969 : The first Beatles' single featuring a George Harrison's song on its A side ("Something" of course) was released . Its flipside featured a John Lennon song (I know it's credited to both Lennon and McCartney however) . This song ("Come Together") was requested by a man who ran for governor of California in 1969. Which was his name ?

Answer: Timothy Leary

Leary was arrested on drug charges and therefore Lennon kept his song for the Beatles. Lennon said he was like a tailor and Leary was a customer who'd ordered a suit and never paid for it, so he had to sell it to another customer . Leary's slogan for his campaign was "come together join the party, all I can tell you is you gotta be free" .
