Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before forming the group Argent, of "Hold Your Head Up" fame, Rod Argent was a member of what popular Top Ten hit making group?

Answer: The Zombies

The Zombies broke up in 1967. When their year-old release "Time Of the Season" started moving up the charts in early 1969, they were involved in other projects and declined a reunion. Even without them promoting the song,it went on to become their final Top Ten hit.
2. Georgie Fame had an interesting sound. What was the name of the back-up group on his earlier hits?

Answer: The Blue Flames

Though Georgie first saw U.S. chart action with his 1965 hit "Yeh, Yeh", he's probably best known for his 1968 Top Ten winner "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde" (without the Blue Flames). In the early '70s Georgie and Alan Price (of The Animals) had their own U.K. TV series called "The Price of Fame."
3. In 1964, when the Beatles took America by storm, one of their more famous shows was the February 12th Carnegie Hall concert. Who was the opening act that night?

Answer: The Briarwood Singers

The Briarwood Singers were a "folk-rock" quintet from Miami. Why them? The folkies had released an album on United Artists, who were also going to be the distributors of The Beatles' film "A Hard Days Night." They were also the company to release the film's soundtrack LP. Perhaps that's the connection. An amazing showcase which didn't really lead anywhere.
4. A much bigger star in the U.K. than the U.S., Sandie Shaw is probably remembered as much for this, her "trademark", as for any of her songs.

Answer: singing barefoot

The story goes that she was due on stage and with no time to find her shoes she just went out there anyway. People took notice and that was that.
Sandie had three charted Billboard hits, but never cracked the U.S. Top 40; meanwhile, she scored eight Top Ten U.K. records. In 1967 she was first U.K. winner of the Eurovision Song Contest with her smash hit "Puppet On A String."
5. Quicky movies to cash in on the (possible) fleeting fame of a music group is nothing new. Who were the stars of the 1965 film "Having A Wild Weekend"?

Answer: The Dave Clark Five

In 1964, the first year of "Beatlemania" in the U.S., the Dave Clark Five racked up an impressive seven Top 20 records. Keyboardist and lead singer Mike Smith died of pneumonia in 2008; this was just two weeks before the Dave Clark Five was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mike had been paralysed for five years following a fall in his home in 2003.
6. In 1967 these Brits just missed the Top Ten with their hit "Silence Is Golden." Who were they?

Answer: The Tremeloes

This song was also the flip side of the Four Seasons' smash hit "Rag Doll." It never charted for them... it wasn't 1967... and the Four Seasons were from New Jersey. It was the Tremeloes' biggest hit, reaching number 11 in the U.S. and number one in U.K.
7. Which one of these British singers is NOT matched with the correct group?

Answer: Freddie & The Freeloaders

Freddie's back-up group was The Dreamers. Freddie the Freeloader was one of U.S. comedian Red Skelton's characters.
8. British? Well... if you weren't British perhaps a British sounding name would do. Which of these is actually British?

Answer: Chad and Jeremy

The Buckinghams were from Chicago. The Lords were from Germany. The Sir Douglas Quintet was from Texas. After the duo broke up, Jeremy turned his attention to his acting career and has appeared in dozens of TV shows (mainly in U.K.).
9. TV history was made when the Beatles first appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February 9, 1964. They also appeared on the Sullivan show one week later. What was the venue of that second appearance?

Answer: The Deauville Hotel

The Deauville Hotel is located in Miami Beach. During their stay the Liverpool lads met Cassius Clay who was preparing for his February 25th Miami Beach fight with Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston. Exciting times in Miami Beach!
10. Steve Winwood began his recording career as lead singer and keyboard player for what popular U.K. group?

Answer: The Spencer Davis Group

Steve joined the Spencer Davis Group in 1963 at the age of 15. The Wombles was a 1970s children's TV show in the U.K. The show contained a lot of catchy tunes; four of them made the U.K. Top Ten in 1974.
