Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which artist recorded "Go Away Little Girl" in 1962? It may be earlier than you think.

Answer: Steve Lawrence

This song's lyrics have a man asking a young woman to leave so he won't be tempted to cheat on his girlfriend. The song probably wouldn't be considered "correct" anymore, but it was a hit for Steve Lawrence in 1962, then again for Donny Osmond in the 1970s. King co-wrote this song with her ex-husband Gerry Goffin.
2. Blood, Sweat and Tears recorded a Carole King song in 1970.

Answer: True

The group Blood, Sweat and Tears released "Hi-De-Ho (That Old Sweet Roll)" in 1970. It was first recorded by the group The City in 1968, and has also been covered by Leslie Uggams, Dorothy Morrison, Dusty Springfield, and Bobby Darin among others. Blood, Sweat and Tears took the song to number 14 on the pop singles chart when they released it in 1970. It was co-written with Gerry Goffin.
3. Which Carole King song won two different Grammy awards for two different artists in the same year?

Answer: You've Got a Friend

Carole King and James Taylor were friends when she wrote this song. They both recorded the song in 1971. Carole King won the Grammy for Song of the Year for "You've Got a Friend" in 1971. James Taylor won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for same the song in the same year.
4. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" was recorded by the Shirelles in 1960. This is the only time that it was recorded in the 20th century.

Answer: False

A beautiful rendition of this song appears on Carole King's own album "Tapestry". It has also been recorded my multiple other performers, including The Four Seasons, Dave Mason, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry and Amy Winehouse, some well into the 21st century. It was co-written with Gerry Goffin.
5. "No Sad Song" (co-written with Toni Stern) was released by which artist in 1971?

Answer: Helen Reddy

Reddy's version of "No Sad Song" peaked at number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In an interview with Ms, magazine, Reddy said that it probably didn't go higher on the charts because it was too antagonistic towards men.
6. "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" has been recorded by male artists.

Answer: True

Although this song has been recorded by many, the most famous recording might be Aretha Franklin's rendition. Other artists who have recorded this song include both Rod Stewart (on his album "Smiler" in 1974); and Bobby Womack (on his album "Facts of Life" in 1973). In each of those cases, they changed the word "woman" in the song to "man'. The original was co-written with Gerry Goffin.
7. The Monkees sang one of Carole King's songs, "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (co-written with Goffin), released in 1967. Which member of the Monkees went on to release a Carole King tribute album entitled "King for a Day" in 2010?

8. Did the Carpenters ever take one of Carole King's songs to the Billboard Hot 100 charts?
