Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yazoo are made up of two members. One of them is Vince Clarke. Who is the other?

Answer: Alison Moyet

Moyet (or "Alf" as she was known at the time) was a post-punk singer who played the local pub circuit at the start of the 80s. In 1981 she posted an advertisement in "Melody Maker" magazine looking for a 'semi-professional band' - she never expected a reply from Vince Clarke, who had just made the hit album "Speak & Spell" with Depeche Mode.
2. As Yazoo formed, the pair set at work creating a demo to show Daniel Miller, founder of Mute Records, whom Clarke worked with while in Depeche Mode. What song did he show him to secure Yazoo a deal?

Answer: Only You

When he played "Only You" to Daniel, Vince believed he was not interested in the song and prepared himself for defeat. Fortunately he was interested and decided to release it as a single in May 1982. It went to number two and gave Yazoo the popularity that sadly would soon kill it.
3. Why is Yazoo named Yaz in America?

Answer: They received a huge lawsuit threat over the name

After the release of "Situation" and "Upstairs at Eric's", the band faced a £3.5 million legal threat from a Texan rock group of the same name. As a result Sire Records, their label in the US, covered up the 'oo' in the name on existing copies with a sticker! From then on, future singles and albums released in the US bore the name Yaz.
4. Yazoo release their first album "Upstairs at Eric's", which reached number two in the UK album charts to critical acclaim. Who does 'Eric' most likely refer to?

Answer: Their producer at Mute Records

The explanation for the album title varies but is probably a reference to their producer Eric Radcliffe's Blackwing studio. After Yazoo's break-up, Vince Clarke would create a short-lived band, The Assembly, together with Eric.

Incidentally, Alison's father is French (her mother was English), something that encouraged her to sing several classic French songs for her 2004 album "Voice".
5. After the release of "Upstairs at Eric's" Yazoo toured briefly. They released a non-album single in the UK in late 1982 before the next album - what was the single?

Answer: The Other Side of Love

"The Other Side of Love" would later appear on some CD versions of "Upstairs at Eric's", but it was not on the original LP or their 1999 compilation album and the band consider it one of their weakest tracks.

"Situation" was the B-side to "Only You" in the UK, though it was an A-side in the US and remixed in the UK in 1990. "Chinese Detectives" is an instrumental that was played at live shows, though bootlegs of this track exist. "Nobody's Diary" came from the next album "You And Me Both", both released in 1983.
6. Recording starts on "You And Me Both" in 1982. The lead track and hit single "Nobody's Diary" was written by Alison Moyet at what age?

Answer: 16

She was only 21 at the time of the single's release, yet wrote the song five years earlier. Her own words: "It was about projection, not experience - the tortured loneliness of someone who had yet to connect with people. Rather than what my lyrics later became, which was the tortured loneliness of someone who had connected with people."

"You And Me Both" was to be a number one album, yet "Nobody's Diary" was the only single ever released from it. Trivia for music production geeks: this album made good use of the then-brand-new (and terribly expensive!) Fairlight CMI, but careful listeners will hear it in months earlier in the song "Bring Your Love Down (Didn't I)". Vince Clarke must have been confident of the success of their debut album!
7. When did Yazoo announce their breakup?

Answer: Shortly before the release of "You And Me Both"

The news came as a shock to fans and critics alike; after only 18 months together Yazoo were no more. Vince Clarke remarked, "after the first album we both started writing for the next record but by then our relationship was strained. We weren't really talking to each other. I had no idea how to communicate. Things in our heads got completely out of hand."
8. While Vince teamed up with producer Eric Radcliffe, Alison embarked on a solo career. What was the name of her hit album released in 1984?

Answer: Alf

Taking her punk-era nickname, "Alf" hit the top of the UK album charts and spawned the singles "Invisible", "All Cried Out" and "Love Resurrection". She co-wrote all the tracks with songwriting team Swain & Jolley, with the exception of "Invisible" which was written specifically for her by Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier.
9. A special "1999 Mix" of one of their tracks was released as a charting single, prior to the release of the compilation album "Only Yazoo". Which song was it?

Answer: Only You

It reached number 38 on the UK singles chart. Additional remixes of "Don't Go" and "Situation" were released at the same time, some unsuccessfully as singles and some appearing on "Only Yazoo".
10. In late 2007, Mute Records tentatively announced new developments for 2008. What happened in 2008?

Answer: All of these answers are correct

After 26 years apart, Alison expressed a desire to reunite. This, coupled with Vince and Andy's desire to take a year off from Erasure while Bell works on solo projects, led to everything coming together perfectly and Yazoo returning to the stage once more. It's also the first time they have ever performed songs from "You And Me Both" - but they certainly didn't disappoint!

Allegedly, Vince has discussed doing something new together with Alison. Whether anything will come to fruition is a mystery - but you can be sure of a new quiz if something happens!
