Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is nothing like a good old Christian send off. Many monarchs say this before they snuff it, forgetting about the peasants they either killed to starved to death during their reign. (Many other people say this too on their deathbed). What are these words?

Answer: "O Lord, into thy hands I commend my spirit"

William the Conqueror, Mary Queen of Scots, Henry V, Catherine of Aragon and Charlemagne all said it, or at least so we are told.
2. Life was harsh for 19th century Australians, especially if you grew up poor and turned bushranger for a bit of dough. Being the most infamous didn't help at all, especially when you were caught. Before your impending death by hanging, you ironically sigh: "Such is life". Who are you?

Answer: Ned Kelly

Ned Kelly spent his years as a bushranger robbing banks and stealing cattle, before being captured at the Glenrowan Inn on the 28th June 1880. He was sentenced to death and hanged at the Old Melbourne Jail in Victoria, which is now a popular tourist destination.
3. When it comes to the block, even the wife of a monarch wasn't spared. "The executioner is, I believe, an expert...and my neck is very slender. Oh God, have pity on my soul!" Which of these wives of Henry VIII was worried about her neck?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Anne Boleyn was executed (beheaded) for alleged treason and adultery on 19 May 1536. She was later buried in the nearby Chapel of Saint Peter-ad-Vincula in the Tower of London.
4. He was a Greek philosopher. His last words were: "Crito, I owe a cock to Asclepius. Will you remember to pay the debt?" . He willingly committed suicide by drinking hemlock. Who was he?

Answer: Socrates

In 399BC Socrates was found guilty by an Athenian court of interfering with the religion of the city and corrupting his students. He chose death over exile.
5. Most British Prime Ministers are only truthful when it comes to end-of-life speeches, especially this one: "Die, my dear doctor ... that's the last thing I shall do!" So ... who was he?

Answer: Viscount Palmerston

Churchill was Prime Minister during WWII and William Pitt the Younger served twice between 1783-1806. Gladstone's last words were: "It is so easy to write, but to write honestly is nearly impossible."
6. After writing so many famous classical novels, and then suffering from Addison's disease, you would want to end the pains of life and embrace: "Nothing but death." Who were you?

Answer: Jane Austen

If you've been living in a cardboard box all these years, Jane Austen is the author of "Pride and Prejudice", "Emma", "Persuasion", "Sense and Sensibility", "Mansfield Park" and "Northanger Abbey".
7. What did Albert Fish, an American child molester, murderer and cannibal, say before his execution?

Answer: "It (death) will be the supreme thrill. The only one I haven't tried!"

Albert Fish was electrocuted in 1936. His full speech was: "What a thrill that will be if I have to die in the electric chair. It will be the supreme thrill. The only one I haven't tried."
8. John Wilkes Booth, whose last words were "Tell my mother that I died for my country. I thought I did it for the best. Useless! Useless!", was shot for assassinating which American President?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was shot as he was watching a play with his wife at Ford's Theatre. His killer, John Wilkes Booth, was shot in 1865.
9. What did the artist and architect Raphael say before his death in 1520?

Answer: "Happy"

Raphael was born during the High Renaissance era. He is famous for his "Madonna" paintings.
10. According to Shakespeare, you need a nice stab to the heart by your most trusted friend. "Et tu Brute?" said Julius Caesar sadly.

Answer: True

Poor old Julius suffered 23 stab wounds (as many as 35 by some accounts) but only Brutus's stroke to the heart was fatal. Although "Et tu Brute" was Shakespeare's guess at what Caesar's last words were (thanks, Arpeggionist), there is no documented evidence to support it.

But for the sake of avoiding debates about what Caesar's last words really were, let's just keep it as it is! I hope you enjoyed this quiz!
