Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Katherine Howard and Anne Boleyn shared a Duke as an uncle. Who was he?

Answer: Duke of Norfolk

Anne's mother and Katherine's father were brother and sister. Their elder brother was Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. He was the same Duke of Norfolk who was in charge of the court that condemned Anne Boleyn to the block.
2. Katherine Howard was the most educated of Henry's wives.

Answer: False

Katherine was raised by her grandmother, the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. The Duchess was away at court a great deal, and therefore Katherine did not have anyone to supervise her education - or her activities, either. She could read and write, but did not have much knowledge of politics, religion, or the courtly arts as did Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, Henry's first two wives.
3. Which queen was Katherine a lady-in-waiting to?

Answer: Anne of Cleves

Katherine's uncle, the Duke of Norfolk, secured the place of lady-in-waiting for Katherine in Anne of Cleves' court. It was while she was in this post that the young and vivacious Katherine first caught the eye of the King.
4. Katherine played around with her music teacher, but did not have a fully fledged affair with him. What was his name?

Answer: Henry Mannox

Mannox gave testimony at Catherine's trial that he never had relations with her, but that they played around together (petted one another). Katherine admitted to enjoying the relationship with Mannox.
5. During Katherine Howard's affair with Francis Dereham what did they refer to each other as?

Answer: husband and wife

One of the first accusations made against Katherine was that she had an existing "pre-contract" with Dereham. A "pre-contract" meaning that they had exchanged vows of their intention to marry one another. If they made these vows before they embarked upon the affair, they would have been considered "married" in the eyes of the church.

This would have made Henry's marriage to Katherine void.
6. Which of the Dowager Duchess' chambermaids first brought charges against Katherine?

Answer: Mary Hall

Mary Hall was the wife of the Reformer, John Lascelles. Katherine's Catholicism was a threat to the new Protestantism in England. So when Lascelles heard about Katherine's affairs, he had Mary bring them to the attention of Thomas Cranmer the Archbishop of Canterbury.
7. For what holiday was Henry celebrating Mass when word first came to him of Katherine's indiscretions?

Answer: All Soul's Day

According to legend, when Henry came that morning to All Souls' Day Mass he found a note from Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury with a list of accusations against Katherine sitting on his chair. At first Henry didn't believe them, but the accusations were serious enough for him to ask Cranmer to investigate them. It didn't take long for the evidence to prove her guilty.
8. Henry was compassionate toward Katherine until Thomas Culpepper admitted that he and Katherine had an affair.

Answer: True

Though the affair with Dereham was considered improper, it was not a crime and Henry was disposed to be compassionate toward Katherine. If a "pre-contract" existed between Dereham and Katherine, Henry could have simply had the marriage annulled and banished her from court. However, after Culpepper admitted having an affair with Katherine, Henry was hurt and angry and had her executed.
9. Where was Katherine held during the investigation?

Answer: Syon House, Middlesex

Katherine was stripped of her title and moved to Syon House, Middlesex. The King ordered that she be treated as her rank accorded her. Therefore, she lived nearly as well there as when she was queen.
10. What date in 1541 was Katherine stripped of her title as Queen?

Answer: November 22

Katherine's title was stripped from her on November 22, 1541. Culpepper and Dereham were executed on December 10, 1541. Katherine was executed at 7 a.m on February 13, 1542
