Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many pregnancies did Henry VII's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, have during her 24 year marriage to the King?

Answer: Six

Catherine was pregnant a total of six times during her marriage to Henry VIII. Four of the children, two daughters and two sons, were either miscarried or were stillborn. A son, Henry, was born on 1 January , 1511, but died on 22 February, 1511. The only child to reach adulthood was Mary I, who was born on 18 February, 1516, and who was Queen from 1553-1558.
2. On what date were Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn officially married?

Answer: 25 January 1533

Henry VIII began looking at Anne Boleyn as a possible replacement for Catherine of Aragon as early as 1526. His attempts to have his first marriage annulled by the Pope were unsuccessful, and Henry broke with the Catholic Church in order to remarry. Though he and Anne were secretly wed on 14 November, 1532, they were officially married on 25 January, 1533. Anne Boleyn was crowned Queen in June, 1533.
3. Catherine Howard, Henry VIII's fifth wife, was accused of adultery. When was she tried for this accusation?

Answer: Never

Henry and Catherine were married on 28 July, 1540. Rumors of her "indelicate" behavior before she married the King, as well as accusations of adultery with two of the King's courtiers, came to Henry on 1 November, 1541. Catherine was questioned by Henry's councillors on 7 November, 1541, and she was stripped of her title as Queen on 23 November, 1541 and imprisoned. No formal trial was held, and Catherine was executed on 11 February, 1542, under a Bill of Attainment which Henry had assented to the previous day.
4. By what title did Henry VIII refer to Catherine of Aragon, after they were divorced?

Answer: Dowager Princess of Wales

While Catherine and her servants continued to call her the Queen of England and Henry's lawful wife, the King referred to her as the Dowager Princess of Wales, in honor of her first marriage to Henry's older brother, the late Prince Arthur.
5. Henry VIII's last wife was Catherine Parr. How many times had she been married previously?

Answer: Twice

Henry VIII's final and sixth wife, Catherine Parr, had been married twice before she married the King. Her first husband, Sir Edward Burgh, was a nobleman who died of unknown causes in 1533 after they were married for four years. Catherine's second husband was John Neville, the Baron of Latimer. They were married from 1534-1543, when Neville died of a fever.
6. How long after the execution of Anne Boleyn did Henry VIII become engaged to Jane Seymour?

Answer: One day

Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife and the only one who gave him a legitimate son, was a lady in waiting to both Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Henry became interested in her during the last few months of Anne's life. Anne was executed on 19 May, 1536, and Jane and Henry were officially betrothed on 20 May, 1536.
7. Anne Boleyn was condemned to death in 1536 for treason and other charges. What special provision did Henry VIII grant for her execution?

Answer: Imported a French swordsman to execute her

Anne Boleyn was accused of treason, incest, and adultery. She was found guilty in May, 1536. Henry decided that a Queen should not be executed by the common axe, and had an expert French swordsman carry out the execution on 19 May, 1536.
8. Which one of Henry VIII's wives was the first woman in England to publish a written work under her own name?

Answer: Catherine Parr

Catherine Parr had at least two books published while she was Queen. The first book was a translation of a Latin work first published by John Fisher, a Catholic bishop who had been executed in 1535 by Henry for refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, recognizing Henry as Head of the Church of England.

The second book was an original work called "Prayers and Meditations". The Queen was viewed with suspicion by certain officials at court for her religious beliefs, but was protected by the King.
9. Which one of Henry VIII's wives was the last to die?

Answer: Anne of Cleves

The German princess Anne of Cleves was Henry VIII's fourth wife, marrying him on 6 January, 1540. Henry was not happy with Anne, as he complained that she looked nothing like the portrait painted of her prior to the marriage, but he proceeded with it for political reasons.

The marriage was never consummated, and it was annulled on 12 July, 1540. Anne stayed in England, living in several estates given to her by Henry, and was referred to as "The King's Beloved Sister". Anne was the last of Henry's wives to die, passing on 16 July, 1557.
10. Henry VIII is buried next to which of his six wives?

Answer: Jane Seymour

Henry VIII died on 28 January, 1547, at the Palace of Whitehall in Westminster. Per his previous instructions, he was buried next to his third wife, Jane Seymour, who he described as the wife that he loved the most, and who had given Henry his cherished male heir, Edward VI.
