Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Katherine Howard was the oldest of Henry VIII's wives at the time when he married her.

Answer: False

Katherine's age is in dispute, but she was actually the youngest of his wives - some people putting her age at 15 and others insisting she was at least 20. However, she still remains the youngest at the time of her marriage. Henry himself was 49 at the time.
2. Katherine was closely related to another of Henry's queens. Which one?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Anne and Katherine were first cousins. However, all of Henry's wives (and Henry himself for that matter) could trace their descent to Edward I, so they were all distantly related to one another.
3. Is Katherine Howard now thought to have been a virgin before marrying Henry VIII?

Answer: No

She probably was not. She did have romances with Henry Mannox, her music teacher, and her distant cousin, Frances Dereham, with whom she was thought to have been intimate. This all happened when Katherine was in her early teens, growing up at her step-grandmother's house.
4. Katherine foolishly made her old boyfriend, Frances Dereham, her private secretary after she became queen.

Answer: True

When the truth came out about their past relationship, it looked very suspicious to everyone.
5. It turned out that Katherine had an affair with Thomas Culpepper after marrying the King. What was Thomas' "job"?

Answer: Gentleman of the King's Bedchamber

Thomas Culpepper and Katherine Howard were cousins. He was one of Henry VIII's favourite servants, which made the betrayal doubly hard for him.
6. Carrying on an affair right under Henry's nose wasn't easy, and Katherine needed help to meet her lover away from prying eyes. Who aided her, by arranging for places to meet and keeping people away?

Answer: Lady Rochford

Lady Rochford was Anne Boleyn's treacherous sister-in-law, who testified against her husband (Anne's brother) George. Probably never very stable to begin with, Lady Rochford seemed to have a complete nervous breakdown once the truth came out. Henry VIII had to pass a special Act enabling him to have insane persons executed in order to satisfy his need for revenge against her.
7. How many people (in addition to Katherine herself) were executed as a direct result of Katherine's indiscretions?

Answer: 3

Katherine herself, of course, and Lady Rochford, Frances Dereham and Thomas Culpepper were all beheaded. The charges against Henry Manox were dropped, as they had only engaged in foreplay when she was in her teens and he was her music tutor.
8. Katherine rehearsed something for hours the night before her execution. What was it?

Answer: How to gracefully lay her head on the block

Katherine was very anxious that she make a good impression on the spectators, so she asked that the block upon which her head was to be struck off on be brought into her chamber. Her bizarre request was granted, and she spent her last hours repeatedly kneeling and placing her head in the right position for it to be stuck off.
9. Where was Katherine buried?

Answer: Close to Anne Boleyn in St. Peter ad Vincula in the Tower of London

I would have LOVED to go into the chapel, but it was closed to visitors last time I was at the Tower of London.
10. Katherine Howard's ghost is reputed to haunt a gallery at one of Henry VIII's palaces. Which palace is this haunted gallery in?

Answer: Hampton Court

Shortly after her arrest Katherine evaded her captors and ran down the gallery to try to see her husband, knowing that if she could speak to him, she could probably soften his heart toward her. However she was caught and dragged back to her chambers, screaming hysterically.

Henry VIII left the palace that night and never saw Katherine again. Within a year of her death there were reports of the ghost of a woman running through the gallery screaming, and she has supposedly been seen as recently as the 1980's.

It was assumed that this was the troubled spirit of Katherine Howard.
