Answer: Confucius

While Confucius is today remembered primarily for his many pithy quotations, he was also a kind teacher who was known to break from tradition in his teaching methods, preferring to form personal relationships with his students. Much of his philospohy was based around treating others with kindness, while exercising self-discipline.

He once wrote: "What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others."

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

Franklin was known for his many talents and witty remarks, but was also regarded as a highly personable man of good character. In between his incredibly productive working life, he also fathered 17 children! One of his many famous quotations is "The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself."

Born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Brussels in 1929, she seriously considered a ballet career after leaving boarding school. In 1952 she was handed the title of 'spiritual chief of the nation'. She passed away from cancer later that same year, at the age of 33. She is also known by her nickname, Evita, which is also the title of a musical based on her life.

Rosa was a 42 year old seamstress whose simple act of defiance sparked a new debate about race laws in the USA. Somewhat ironically, it is estimated that 75% of people who rode the bus in Montgomery in 1955 were black. She said of her action (or inaction) that "When I made that decision I knew that I had the strength of my ancestors with me." Rosa also told stories about having to walk to school as a child, as the buses were only for the white students.
8. How long did Nelson Mandela spend in prison as a result of standing up for his beliefs?

Answer: Over 20 years

Mandela's opposition to the South African apartheid regime initially resulted in a death sentence, later commuted to life in prison. He was in prison for about 27 years, before an international campaign led to his release in 1990. In 1994 he bacame the first President of the new democratic nation.

He is well known for his compassion and incredible strength of will, once saying "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. "

Mother Teresa was born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Albania. She decided to become a nun at an early age, and named herself after the patron saint of missionaries, St Therese of Lisieux. She spent much of her work helping the extremely poverty-stricken communities in Calcutta, India. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work.
