Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was George III's wife?

Answer: Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz

Queen Charlotte married George the very day she arrived in London for their wedding. It was September 8, 1761, and they went on produce sixteen children, two of whom didn't survive to adulthood. Queen Charlotte died in 1818, two years before George.
2. Of George III's six daughters which one died young prompting his illness to return?

Answer: Amelia

Not long after she turned fifteen she started to suffer the early symptoms of what turned out to be tuberculosis and later suffered an attack of measles. In 1810 she became violently ill and later died. Her death led her father the King into a permanent relapse of his mental illness.
3. Which Act of Parliament prevents royals from marrying without royal permission?

Answer: Royal Marriages Act 1772

The Act was proposed by the King as a direct result of the marriage of his brother, Prince Henry Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn. He had married a commoner in 1771.
The prince or princess must have royal permission to marry until the age of twenty-five. However, any member of the Royal Family over the age of 25 who has been refused the sovereign's consent may marry one year after giving notice to the Privy Council of their intention to so marry, unless both houses of Parliament expressly declare their disapproval.
This Act is still in practice to this day.
4. Who became monarch when George IV died?

Answer: William IV

William IV became king following his brother's death in 1830. He married Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen following Princess Charlotte's death. They had two children, neither of whom made it to adulthood.
There was no King William VI...yet.
King William III reigned jointly with his wife Mary II from 1689 to 1694 and, following her death, as sole monarch till 1702.
King William V has not begun his reign as his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II is still reigning.
5. What was the relation between Prince William Duke of Gloucester and Princess Mary were when they married.

Answer: First cousins

Princess Mary's upbringing was sheltered as she spent most of her time with her parents and sisters. King George and Queen Charlotte were very protective, especially towards the girls. Charlotte was 31 when she married, Elizabeth was 48, and Mary herself was 40. Mary married her first cousin, Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. They had no children.
6. Which two princesses moved to Prince Adolphus' house at Kew following their mother's death.

Answer: Augusta and Mary

Augusta and Mary moved out of Dutch House and into their brother's house so as to not be present at the laying out of their mother's corpse.
7. Which princess was madly in love with General Fitzroy but tragically died before a wedding was arranged?

Answer: Amelia

Princess Amelia was madly in love with General Fitzroy but due to The Royal Marriages Act she had two choices: gain permission from the King (her father) or wait until she was 25 when she could marry the general without his permission. But the drawback was, of course, that she would lose her life as a princess. So she fought valiantly to gain permission from her father.

But two years after her 25th birthday she died in agonizing pain, possibly due to tuberculosis.
8. Which daughter of George III did Hereditary Prince Frederick, Landgravine of Hesse-Homburg marry?

Answer: Princess Elizabeth

In the drawing room of The Queen's House the maids of honor who attended The Royal's wedding were summoned and all the Queen's "family". The Prince Regent (future George IV) and The Privy Council approved of the match. Elizabeth and her warrior prince were to have a happy marriage.
9. Princess Charlotte of Wales (daughter of George IV) was never enthusiastic of her aunt Mary's marriage. Whom did Mary marry?

Answer: William of Gloucester

Princess Mary visited Claremont but saw Charlotte's eyes were only for The Prince of Coburg.
10. Who was the last of George III's children to die?

Answer: Mary

Princess Mary Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh was born in 1776 shortly before America's Declaration of Independence. She married her first cousin Prince William Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh son of her father's brother.
She and William had no children together. Princess Mary was said to be the favorite aunt of her niece, Queen Victoria. She shared her elder brother's disliking for Caroline of Brunswick.
