Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name was Laura given at birth?

Answer: Laura Elizabeth Ingalls

After Laura was married, her husband would call her 'Bess' as he had a sister called Laura of whom he was not fond. He was to call her this for the rest of their lives together.
2. Where was Laura born?

Answer: Pepin, Wisconsin

The Ingalls family were later to live in Walnut Grove and DeSmet, and Laura and Almanzo would settle in Mansfield after a dozen years of marriage, to stay for the rest of their lives. Their farm is open as a museum where a good number of Ingalls and Wilder property is on view.
3. Although Laura wrote a set of books about her life, they were not totally true to the sequence of events she experienced. Her books tell how they travelled from the Big Woods to the prairie, and from there to the banks of Plum Creek, but in reality the family went somewhere else between the prairie house and the dugout at Plum Creek. Where did they go?

Answer: They went back to Wisconsin

Laura and her elder sister, Mary, travelled with Ma and Pa to Kansas, where their sister, Carrie, was born. After just a year on that prairie the family returned to the little log cabin outside Pepin, and from there they went to Minnesota. Laura condensed this part of her life to have all three girls travel with their parents into Kansas, and from there to Minnesota.

The reason for this was that her first book, 'Little House in the Big Woods' was written as a single story to honour her father, and Carrie was included in it.

When she wrote 'Little House on the Prairie', she decided to have it run on from the first book rather than be a prequel which might confuse her young readers.
4. The television programme was based on the town of Walnut Grove in Minnesota. Did this place really exist?

Answer: Yes

The family moved away from Walnut Grove twice, and actually lived in the town at one point, when Pa ran a butcher's shop. During this time Laura began to earn money by babysitting and doing housework for other people.
5. The Ingalls family moved to Burr Oak for a brief period, where Pa and Ma ran a hotel. This part of Laura's life was not written about in her set of books because it was a very sad time for the whole family, as her baby brother died before he was a year old. What was his name?

Answer: Charles Frederick Ingalls

The family called him Freddie, and from the outset he was a sickly child. He was born in Walnut Grove, and died as the family were travelling to Burr Oak.
6. The eldest Ingalls daughter, Mary, went blind when she was 14 years old. What was the cause of her loss of sight?

Answer: a series of strokes

Laura recorded in her book that Mary had scarlet fever, which took her sight. Mary did have this disease, but it was the series of strokes she suffered at the same time which took her sight. She was to spend the rest of her life in pain, and as a woman further strokes would attack her on a constant basis until her body finally gave up the fight to live.
7. Most of the northern half of the United States was plunged into a severe winter during the 1880s, including the little town where the Ingalls family settled. The eighty or so inhabitants who weathered the storms were nearly starved out because food stocks could not be taken to them. In fact, if it were not for two young men who risked their lives to travel to a homestead where wheat had been raised it is likely that none of them would have seen the spring. One of these men was Laura's future husband, Almanzo Wilder, but who was the other one?

Answer: Cap Garland

In later years Laura was to admit that she had a crush on Cap Garland; he was only a little older than she was. Almanzo was ten years older than her, and she didn't even consider him as a beau until he started to pay attention to her.
8. Did Laura graduate from school?

Answer: No

The teacher was holding Laura back from graduating because he wanted the class to graduate together, but she left school before this was possible. Laura had been teaching for some time before this, but was disappointed that she never graduated.
9. Which member of the family came to work on Almanzo and Laura's homestead, taking care of their flock of sheep?

Answer: Peter

Peter was to stay with Almanzo and Laura for some time, taking care of the sheep. Laura had bought half the flock with the money from her last term teaching school, and it was the money raised by finally selling the flock which made the deposit money for their eventual home in Mansfield.
10. In what month was Laura's daughter Rose born?

Answer: December

Laura wanted a Rose in December! Both Almanzo and Laura had birthdays in February. Christmas was the biggest celebration of the Ingalls/Wilder years, and the ones recorded in more detail than any other in Laura's books. Along with family friends, Mr and Mrs Boast, the three families celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year by gathering at each house in turn.
