Answer: Alexander III

Alexander III (ruled 1881-94) was a very conservative Tsar and Nicholas II (ruled 1894-1917) tended to follow his example. This is in contrast to Alexander's father, Alexander II (ruled 1855-81), who was known as 'Alexander the Liberator' because of his role in the emancipation (freeing) of the serfs.
2. Who did Nicholas marry in 1894?

Answer: Alexandra

Alexandra was born Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt in Germany in 1872. Upon marrying, she adopted the Russian Orthodox faith and became known as Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova.
3. How many daughters did Nicholas and Alexandra have?

Answer: Four

Often collectively called 'OTMA', the daughters were, in order of birth: Olga, Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia. Anastasia is probably the most famous of the daughters.
4. Nicholas's only son, and youngest child, was called Alexis. What illness or condition did he suffer from?

Answer: Haemophilia

Haemophilia is characterised by a tendency to bleed very easily because of a lack of blood clotting factors. It's a hereditary genetic disorder and was known as 'the royal disease' because it affected so many of the European royal houses.
5. What dynasty did Nicholas II belong to?

Answer: Romanov

The Romanov dynasty lasted from 1613-1917. The Rurik dynasty preceded it, lasting from 1157 to 1598. Korsakoff's Syndrome is a disease resulting from thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency and is often related to alcohol abuse. One type of alcohol is vodka, a popular brand of which is Smirnoff.
6. Everyone has heard of Rasputin, the 'Mad Monk', but what was his first name?

Answer: Grigori

Grigori Rasputin (1869-1916) was a colourful character from Siberia. He exerted a huge influence on the royal family, particularly Alexandra, and it has been argued that this influence was a major factor in the downfall of the Romanov dynasty. Rasputin was murdered in 1916 by group of nobles led by Prince Felix Yusupov.

They poisoned him, shot him four times, beat him up and finally drowned him. It's safe to say that they didn't like him very much!
7. Bloody Sunday (1905) resulted in 92 dead and hundreds wounded, according to official figures. However, it's likely that these numbers are an underestimate. Answer: Ramsay MacDonald

Ramsay MacDonald later became Britain's first Labour Prime Minister. Bloody Sunday is seen as the start of the attempted Russian Revolution of 1905.
8. From 1904-05, Nicholas's reign oversaw a disastrous war for Russia. Which country was it fought against?

Answer: Japan

The Japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese War came as a surprise to many world observers. At home, the defeat proved to be a major cause of the Russian Revolution of 1905.
9. World War I was one of many factors in the Romanov downfall. One early battle in particular was notable because of the almost complete destruction of the Russian Second Army. It was The Battle of ... ?

Answer: Tannenberg

The battle occurred in August 1914 and represented an overwhelming victory for the Germans. The Russian Second Army was effectively destroyed, with 92,000 Russian troops captured, another 78,000 killed or wounded, and only 10,000 escaping. The Russian commander, Samsonov, couldn't bring himself to report the loss to Nicholas II so he shot himself.
10. Nicholas, his wife, their daughters, son and four others were executed on 17th July 1918. Who led the execution?

Answer: Yurovsky

Yakov Yurovsky died in 1938 of a peptic ulcer. The other people killed along with the royal family were Eugene Botkin (the family doctor), Anna Demidova (Alexandra's maid), Ivan Kharitonov (the family chef) and Alexei Trupp (a footman).
