Brady was shot in the head during an attempt on Reagan's life outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. In an early example of the media rush to scoop a story, Brady was announced as passed away by most media outlets. He officially remained as Press Secretary for he rest of Reagan's terms even though he was unable to perform his duties. Brady was paralyzed on his left side but eventually regained most of his speech.

He and his wife Sarah became advocates for gun control.
