Answer: George Burns

Born Nathan Birnbaum in New York in 1896, George Burns was a well loved actor and comedian whose trade mark was his ever present cigar. Married for many years to comedienne Gracie Allen, the pair starred in the "Burns and Allen Show" on CBS and NBC for over 16 years.

After Gracie's death in 1964, George continued to work in radio, TV and films winning an Oscar in 1976 as Best Supporting Actor in "The Sunshine Boys" - he was 80 years old. He died in 1996 just a couple of months after his 100th birthday

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor was born in Hampstead, England in 1932 to American parents and moved to Los Angeles in 1939. Her glittering film career has often been over shadowed by her private life, being married eight times (but only to seven men - she wed Richard Burton twice!). She has been the owner of several famous pieces of jewellery, perhaps the most famous being the Krupp Diamond.

Answer: Clark Gable

Clark Gable was born in Ohio in 1901 and dropped out of school aged 16. Inspired to take up acting after seeing a production of "The Bird of Paradise", he was eventually signed by MGM in 1930 and by the time he starred with Jean Harlow in "Red Dust" he was MGM's most important star.

His most famous role is perhaps as Rhett Butler in the epic blockbuster "Gone with the Wind", yet his only Oscar came from the relatively low budget film "It Happened One Night", directed by Frank Capra. His habit of smoking three packs of cigarettes a day, together with his excessive drinking, is thought to have contributed to his early death at 59.

Famed not only for his novels but also for his witticisms, travel writing and personality, Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in the town of Florida in the state of Missouri in 1835. He was a prolific writer and his book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" has been called by some the first great American Novel.

Not only was Golda Meir the first woman to become Prime Minister of Israel, she was also the first former American citizen to hold this office. She was born in Kiev (Ukraine) in 1898 but by 1906 her family had moved to the United States. In 1921 she emigrated to Palestine with her husband Morris Meyerson to help found a Jewish state.

The wisecracking Julius Henry 'Groucho' Marx was the the acknowledged leader and most popular member of the world famous Marx Brothers team. With his trade mark painted on moustache, fat cigar, stooped walk and quick fire, and witty one liners, Groucho Marx led his brothers into super stardom with their unique style of zany and slapstick humour.
