Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I file papers with US State governments to form businesses, I assist with US Securities and Exchange Commission and other federal agency filings, and I do a lot of proofreading. What's my line?

Answer: Paralegal

Some law firms call my position a paralegal and some call it legal assistant. I work in the corporate field, so I've included some of my duties in the question. My colleagues who are litigation paralegals will assist at trial -- both preparing for trial and attending the actual trial. Most law firms require at least a bachelor's degree to be hired as a paralegal. Not all law firms require a paralegal certificate. My law firm will start people out as a "project assistant" without a paralegal certificate, and then may promote them to full paralegal after they've gained a specified amount of experience.

2. My job involves the use of a soldering iron, an oscilloscope, a multimeter and different sizes of screwdrivers. When things go wrong, I try to make them work again. What is my job?

Answer: Electronic Engineer

I've had an interest in electronics since I was in my early teens, over 10 years ago. In my job, I repair cash registers and calculators as well as other electronic and electrical devices used in shops or offices. I've 'had a go' at repairing all manner of other things too; computers, toys, hi-fi equipment etc. with varying degrees of success. It's all good experience though. :)
As for the wrong answers, well, when things go wrong you can either throw them away, read a book on how to fix them yourself or flush them down the toilet. But why put me out of a job?

Answer: Poet

A poet historically has been ridiculed for being out of touch, for being radical and also has been revered at the very center of public activity. Many people say that poetry is not useful.
Poetry is different everywhere--from long rhyming line dramatic monologues to image-dense haiku to minimalist image poetry.
How long does it take to write a poem? It can be minutes, hours, days, weeks and, even years sometimes. Don't ask about money.
Do I write poetry all the time? No. I play a lot of trivia as you know. Does it take a lot of quiet and continuous time get a focus and clarity? Yes.
Did many people write poetry while prisoners? Yes, see Mao Tse-Tung and Ho Chi Minh above.

Answer: A California School Bus Driver

You may call me Laughinglion and I shall leave you with with a poem-

A Bus Driver's Prayer - Author Unknown

Please, Lord, watch me this day.

Please help me remember to watch all five mirrors, two dozen windows, eight gauges, six warning lights, six dozen faces, three lanes of traffic and to keep a third eye open for wobbling bicycles and daydreaming pedestrians, especially teenagers wearing headsets who are in another world.

Please Lord, help me hear all train whistles, truck and automobile horns, police sirens and the two-way radio.

Please also let me hear when one of my students calls for me, and just needs a listening ear.

Please Lord, give me a hand for the gear lever, the steering wheel, the route book, the radio microphone and the turn-signal lever, while being able to hand out kleenexes, pencils, or other things the kids may need.

And Lord, please grant me the self-control to keep my hands away from Johnny's neck when he's pinching and biting Billy, while trying to keep everybody in their seat, and reminding them that sticking their head outside the window is not safe.

And one more thing, dear Lord, please don't let Mary be sick all over the bus.

And finally Lord, please watch over us all so that we can do it again next year.

AMEN
5. My job has involved cross-checking handwriting, separating and lifting large bundles and noting in the computer money amounts of all sizes, credit cards and other documents. Holding onto valuable goods until claimed by customer. Often involving the use of a loupe, or magnifying glass. What is the job?

Answer: U.S.P.O. Claims Clerk

Everything from a King Arthur's sword, to the funeral booklet of Coretta Scott King passed through our hands---a bit frightening, isn't it?

But we've made remarkable "saves" too. A person's luggage going to Caracas, full of new clothes for his boys; a treasured pair of sandals from a little girl's childhood - not to mention the money, in whatever form, that went to its rightful owner.

6. Though not my current job, I once had a rather unique form of employment. The job allowed me to travel to different parts of the Bronx and Westchester Counties on a weekly basis and often involved covering cushions. What job do you think I had working on such brand names as Soren Sogaard, Olhausen and Brunswick?

Answer: Pool Table Mechanic

I worked with my uncle for a few years traveling from pool room to pool room working on the tables. Pool table maintenance mainly involves replacing the felt over the slate tables and cushions. The covering part isn't tough, that is more about being precise and keeping the new felt tight.

This is so that the balls can roll free and unimpeded on the table surface. The tough part is dismantling the tables piece by piece to get to the area which needs to be refelted. Most of the felts were held in place with staples, but smaller bar room sized tables would be held in place with the help of glue. Question by BxBarracuda
7. A few years ago, I had a job that had many tasks including: balancing pH, checking chemicals, backwashing, and skimming. I had to take a class to do the job. The scantily clad ladies looking on were just an additional job benefit. What was my job?

Answer: Certified Pool Operator

I had a job at a condominium complex a few years ago and became a Certified Pool Operator to back up my boss when he went on vacation. I learned a lot about pool care and enjoyed the job. Asking the ladies to get out of the pool to test the water was hard, but convincing myself that the sweat was from the summer heat was harder.

8. The supply list of one of the companies I work for includes penetrameters, lead numbers/letters, warning signs, exposure calculators, dosimeters and sealed sources. What line of business is this company in?

Answer: Industrial Radiography

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a procedure used to investigate the integrity of various objects while causing the least physical damage to that object as possible. There are several methods such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance, electron microscopy and liquid penetrant testing, amongst others. But if you're carrying around a dosimeter (which is sort of like a personal Geiger counter) and an imaging device using a sealed source (usually radioisotope Cs-137, Iridium-192 or Cobalt-60), then you're in the radiography business. In the case of this company, products are used almost exclusively in the oil and gas industry in order to check for fatigue, flaws or cracks in pipelines. An interesting job, but I could do without the Homer Simpson jokes.

Answer: I.V. Therapy Nurse

Intravenous therapy is a part of patient care that is focused on the administration of medications and fluids as directed by a physician. Training requirements for nurses that start and monitor I.V.s are dependant on their state of licensure. In locations where IV Therapy Nurses work as part of a specialized team, they are expected to have a certain level of nursing skill. I was in a one year LPN program in the state of Pennsylvania, and part of my training was in the starting and removal of IVs and the monitoring of the patient and the IV during the process.

I may deal with issues such as transference and regression. Any more information than that may allow the answer to slip out. What is my job?

Answer: Psychotherapist

A psychotherapist is mainly there to help ordinary people whose problems have become too much for them, and usually work with individuals, although couples, families and groups are also within our scope. You can also come simply to learn more about yourself or for experience as a counselling student to see what it's like for yourself. Albert Ellis founded Rational Emotive Therapy, a forerunner of modern Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, while Melanie Klein developed the Inner Child theory among others. And there was another hint there if you got it, the Freudian Slip!
