Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who painted "Sunflowers"?

Answer: Vincent van Gogh

The still life, "Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers", on display in the London National Gallery, is one of a series of similar images.
2. Who painted "Houses of Parliament at Sunset"?

Answer: Claude Monet

This is one of a series painted at different times of the day. They were all from the same view point - the window of Monet's lodgings. This one was painted in 1902.
3. Who painted the best known version of "The Last Supper"?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

This, most well known, work measures 15 feet by 29 feet (4.5m x 8.8m). It was started in 1495 and completed in 1498.
4. Who painted "The Mona Lisa"?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

The sitter has been identified as Lisa Gherardini, the wife of wealthy Florentine businessman Francesco del Giocondo. Leonardo began this painting in 1503 and took four years to complete it.
5. What type of painting is "The Last Supper"?

Answer: Tempera on gesso

The difference between this painting and a fresco is that it is painted onto dry, sealed plaster rather than onto fresh, wet plaster.
6. Who painted "The Scream"?

Answer: Edvard Munch

This piece was painted in 1893 and was originally called "Despair".
7. Who painted "Le dejeuner sur l'herbe"?

Answer: Edouard Manet

This painting was rejected by the Paris Salon for exhibition in 1863. This may have been because of the juxtaposition of fully dressed men and a naked woman. Fairly radical at the time, perhaps?
8. Who painted "The Ecstasy of St Cecilia"?

Answer: Raphael

The painting was commissioned by Elena Duglioli dall'Olio of Bologna. She was famous for having visions and ecstatic fits in which music played a great part, which is probably why she asked for a picture of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music.
9. Who painted the best known "The Birth of Venus"?

Answer: Sandro Botticelli

Perhaps an unfair question. Several artists have produced work by this title, including Alexandre Cabanel and Pablo Picasso. I think Botticelli's is probably the most well known.
10. Who painted "Persistence of Memory"?

Answer: Salvador Dali

This painting was first exhibited in Paris, where it sold for $250!
