Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vincent van Gogh had a very supportive brother. Do you know his name?

Answer: Theo

Theo was Vincent's youngest brother and Vincent corresponded with Theo until the end of his life. Theo, though not a rich man himself, was always generous with both emotional and financial support.
2. Which very successful artist, who painted Judith Beheading Holofernes and Supper at Emmaus, was a murderer?

Answer: Caravaggio

Caravaggio was seems to have had a penchant for violence and was frequently in trouble over his bad behaviour. Eventually he killed someone in a street brawl and had to flee Rome.
3. What was the favourite subject of painter George Stubbs?

Answer: Animals

He was particularly good at painting horses and was kept busy by proud owners who wanted portraits of their beloved horses.
4. Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous pictures in the world. Where is it housed?

Answer: The Louvre Museum, Paris, France

In 1911 it was stolen (but recovered two years later) and in 1956 acid was thrown at the bottom half of the famous painting and later the same year a rock was thrown at it. Since then it has been protected by bullet proof glass which has prevented any further attempts at vandalism.
5. Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley. Which group of painters are they closely associated with?

Answer: Impressionists

The impressionists were a group of painters who were rejected by the Paris Salon, which was the main art authority of the time. They set up their own exhibition instead. They liked to paint out of doors and use bright colours and rough brush strokes to depict the atmosphere and feeling of a subject, rather than a faithful representation as had been the norm before.
6. The famous painter Edouard Manet had a very famous sister in law who was also a successful artist. Can you tell me her name?

Answer: Berthe Morrisot

Berthe married Manet's brother Eugene, and they had one child who was a daughter called Julie. Berthe Morisot was a very successful painter who specialised in home and family type subjects, because there was not as much freedom for women to go out as there was for men.
7. The artist Rembrandt was married twice. What was the name of his second wife?

Answer: Hendrike

When Rembrandt had financial problems his son Titus set up a business with Hendrike and they employed Rembrandt. This meant that his earnings from his paintings were the company's property and could not be taken from him.
Hendrike was his common law wife. If he had remarried he would've lost financially under the will of his first wife, Siska (he would've forfeited his inheritance).
8. William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rosetti, John Everett Millais, Ford Maddox Brown. Which group of painters did they belong to?

Answer: Pre-Raphaelites

Many of the Pre-Raphaelite paintings were considered shocking when they first appeared. Instead of depicting bible characters in an idealised way they showed them as real people emphasizing their physicality. They were also unafraid to address difficult subjects such as poverty and prostitution.
9. Which artist shared a house with Van Gogh in Arles when Vincent wanted to set up an artists' colony?

Answer: Gauguin

Vincent and Paul Gauguin had a very tempestuous relationship and argued all the time over technique. As the weather worsened and they were unable to go out they argued even more. It is probable that Vincent was also suffering from malnutrition and that this coupled with his stress led to his nervous breakdown.
10. Which city did Canaletto spend most of his life painting?

Answer: Venice

Giovanni Antonio Canal was known as Canaletto and painted many majestic and detailed views of Venice. He was born into a wealthy family and it is uncertain how he came by the name of Canaletto, although it may be that it was to distinguish himself from his father who was a theatrical scene painter.

In his years he worked with his father and brother but when he turned to landscape painting he became successful very quickly.
