Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha. Martha was upset because Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him speak. What were the first words he said to Martha (in the King James Version)?

Answer: 'Martha, Martha'

Martha did all the preparing of food for Jesus' visit to their home while Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to him preach. Martha asked Jesus if he would tell Mary to help. Jesus replied, 'Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things.' Luke 10:41

He compared Mary to Martha and noted that Mary, who was listening to Jesus, had 'chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her'. Luke 10:42
2. Why were the people of Israel forbidden to eat pork?

Answer: Swine do not chew cud

Edible animals had to have cloven hooves and chew cud. Historically, not eating pork was also a wise idea practically: pork meat can have parasites that could be deadly to those who eat it if the meat isn't cooked properly. It seems God really was taking care of the people of Israel when he forbade the consumption of pork!

This rule is mentioned in Leviticus 11:7-8: 'And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. / Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.'
3. Who was Miriam?

Answer: Sister to Moses and Aaron

This is noted in Numbers 26:59: 'And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bare to Levi in Egypt: and she bare unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.'

Miriam first made an appearance in the Book of Exodus, when she spied the baby Moses in the river. She later appeared leading a song and dance: 'And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.' Exodus 15:20
4. From what tree was Adam forbidden to eat fruit?

Answer: The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

The Bible mentions it was the 'fruit' of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, not an apple tree like many people think, in Genesis 3:2: 'But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.'

The fruit which is explicitly mentioned in this chapter, however, is fig: when the tree made them realize that they were naked, 'they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.' Genesis 3:7
5. What was the name of the child God gave Eve to replace her dead son Abel?

Answer: Seth

This is told in Genesis 4:25: 'And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.'

This is during the aftermath of the very first murder, in which Cain killed his brother Abel, both children of Adam and Eve.
6. During the Feast of Weeks, described in Deuteronomy, what kind of offering was to be given to the Lord?

Answer: A freewill offering

This is in Deuteronomy 16:10. They were to give a freewill offering according to the blessing the Lord had given them: 'And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the Lord thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the Lord thy God, according as the Lord thy God hath blessed thee...'

The freewill offering was special; it wasn't a set gift or offering, it was simply just what you had to give. Every person would give a different amount or item according to his or her means. In this way, it is similar to the modern offering or collection plate that is passed around in many churches today.
7. Who was King Saul's army commander?

Answer: Abner

Abner was later murdered by Joab when David came to power. This is described in 2 Samuel 3:27: 'And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.'

David regretted the murder and proclaimed his own innocence in the affair. He later led the mourning that accompanied Abner's funeral (2 Samuel 3:28-32).
8. She is now known as the epitome of the wicked woman. What was the name of King Ahab's spouse?

Answer: Jezebel

It was Jezebel who later sought to kill Elijah; she and Ahab installed the religion of Baal. Her story is told in the Book of Kings. The saga begins in 1 Kings 16:31: 'And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.'

Jezebel's purging of the prophets of Yahweh is told in 1 Kings; only Elijah managed to escape: Jezebel sent a message to Elijah warning him of her intentions, and when he saw it he made his escape (1 Kings 19:2-3).
9. The plucky David killed Goliath with stones. How many did he put in his bag before he went to fight Goliath?

Answer: 5

I Samuel 17:40 tells this story: 'And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.'

The chapter goes on to say that Goliath 'disdained' David because he was so young. Goliath was about to be greatly surprised: those stones and the youth were enough to kill him!
10. How many days were the Jews forbidden to eat leavened bread at Passover?

Answer: 7

Passover was also known as the feast of the unleavened bread. It occurred when the Lord wished to punish the people of Egypt by killing each family's first born son, while passing over the children of Israel. In order to be passed over, the children of Israel were instructed to do specific things, including avoiding leavened bread.

This story is told in Exodus 12:15: 'Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.'
