Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Satan himself does not appear much in the Old Testament, the ancient book of Job is an exception. Satan is in the company of what group when he approaches God?

Answer: "The sons of God."

"One day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, 'Whence do you come?' Then Satan answered the Lord and said, 'From roaming the world and patrolling it.'" (Job I: 6 - 7)

Interestingly, God and Satan seem to have a very cordial relationship!
2. In Genesis, a creature turns up that legend considers to be Satan. What is the creature?

Answer: "A serpent."

"Now the Serpent was the most cunning of all the animals that the Lord God had made. The Serpent asked the woman, 'Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?'" (Genesis 3:1)

Like he didn't know!
3. Satan also has other names. Which of these are often used to refer to him?

Answer: All of these.

"The Devil" can be found in the Latin "diabolus" which came from the Greek "diabolos" meaning "slanderer".

"Lucifer" is borrowed from Isaiah 14:12, referring to the fallen son of dawn.

"Beelzebub" was a Philistine god.
4. In the New Testament we first encounter Satan when he tempts Christ in the desert. How many times does Satan tempt Christ?

Answer: 3 times

First Satan tells Jesus to turn the stones into bread, then he challenges him to throw himself off the parapet of the temple, and lastly Satan offers Christ all the kingdoms of the world if he pays homage to him.

"Away with you, Satan! Scripture has it: 'You shall do homage to the Lord your God; him alone shall you adore.'" (Matthew 8:10)
5. Jesus tells his Disciples that he will have to suffer at the authority of the elders and be put to death, only to be raised again, Peter began to insist to Christ that he would be spared this terrible fate. Christ then tells Peter to get from his sight and calls him what?

Answer: "you Satan!"

"'May you be spared, Master! God forbid that any such thing should happen to you!' Jesus turned on Peter and said, 'Get out of my sight, you Satan! You are trying to make me trip and fall. You are not judging by God's standards but by man's.'" (Matthew 16:22-23)
6. Jesus is performing an exorcism when some of the people say that he is casting out demons by the power of Satan. Jesus responds to this unjust charge by saying what?

Answer: "A house divided against itself can not stand."

"Any house torn by dissension falls. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom last?--since you say it is by Satan that I cast out devils, by whom do your people cast them out?" (Luke 11:17-19)

"I watched Satan fall from the sky like lightning" is from Luke 10:18.

The other two I made up.
7. Scripture tells us that right before the Last Supper Satan possessed one of the 12 Apostles. Which Apostle was it?

Answer: Judas

"Then Satan took possession of Judas, the one called Iscariot, a member of the Twelve." (Luke 22:3)

Although later Peter would deny Christ and Thomas would doubt him, these mistakes were not attributed to Satanic possession.

John on the other hand shows the most loyalty to Christ by attending his Crucifixion.
8. In 2 Corinthians we are warned that Satan is so deceptive he can even appear to us as a what?

Answer: "Angel"

"For even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14)

So think twice the next time an angel covered in light comes knocking on your door.
9. In what New Testament book are we told that Satan is like a lion?

Answer: 1 Peter

"Your opponent the devil is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8)

It's hard to relax when a hungry lion is walking up and down your street!
10. In the Book of Revelation Satan is described to us in Apocalyptic language; what creature is used to denote him?

Answer: "A dragon."

"He seized the dragon, who is the devil or Satan, and chained him up for a thousand years." (Revelation 20:2)
