Saint Cecilia lived in Roman society and converted at a young age to Christianity. She vowed to live a virginal life in the service of God. Alas her parents had different plans for their daughter and arranged a marriage with Valerian of Trastevere. Interestingly, she is also one of the patron saints of difficult marriages. Cecilia persuaded both her husband and his brother to convert to Christianity and to develop a ministry of providing decent burials to martyred Christians. Ironically, all three would meet ugly deaths.

The marriage was a struggle and her oldest son Augustine led an impious life. Through her tender and righteous example she was able to convert her husband and children to Christianity.

Saint Helen is the patron saint of archaeologists. Saint Rita is the patron saint of loneliness, and Saint Lucy is the patron saint of blindness and pencil-makers.

Saint Agnes was born into Roman nobility in 291 A.D. Sempronius, the Prefect at the time, desired Agnes to marry his son. She refused in the name of Christ, and thus he had her condemned to death. She was dragged through the streets naked to a brothel because Roman law strictly prohibited execution of virgins. Stories say that any man who attempted to rape her were struck blind. She was finally executed by beheading when she refused to deny her faith.

On the way to her execution a young lawyer scoffed at her and asked her to send some of the roses when she got to Heaven. After her martyrdom, an angel-child supposedly appeared to the lawyer with a basket of fruit and roses not native to the area, then the messenger mysteriously vanished.
