Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Little pig, little pig, let me come in. No, no, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin."

Answer: Gnathion

The gnathion is the lowest point of the jawbone where the chin juts out. It is used as one of the many measuring points in the cranial bone, also including the incision, nasion, glabella, bregma, porion and orbitale points. These are often used by doctors, scientists, forensic anthropologists and paleontologists.
2. I am the space between the forefinger and thumb

Answer: Purlicue

The purlicue is the "V" shaped area of loose skin flap between the thumb and forefinger. It is also another way of describing a curl or flourish in writing.
3. The name given to the dangly thing at the back of the throat

Answer: Uvula

The correct name is palatine uvula, but people most often call it uvula, or "dangly thing at the back of the throat". It helps swallowing and speech, and also has many glands that produce saliva to keep the throat moist.
4. Fred Astaire was often seen dancing cheek to cheek

Answer: Zygomatic bone

The zygomatic bone is another name for the cheekbone. It is a bridge between the temporal bone and the upper jawbone. It protects the underlying muscles from injury and also the area just below the eyes.
5. A place in the pancreas where insulin is created

Answer: Islets of Langerhans

Islets of Langerhans are insulin producing cells within the pancreas. They make insulin and glucagon which are both vital in helping to regulate levels of blood sugar in the body.
6. A place where sweaty body odour lingers

Answer: Axilla

The apocrine glands located under the armpit, or axilla, produce sweat to cool the body down. This can sometimes release an odour as the bacteria breaks down protein. Most people can alleviate this by personal hygiene, where others need medical treatment for a condition called bromhidrosis.
7. An unusual place on the ear for an ear piercing

Answer: Tragus

Most people have their ears pierced on the soft part of the ear called the lobe. There are many other places on the ear where piercings can be made and these include the tragus. This is the skin covered cartilage on the outer ear, nearest the face, which projects slightly over the ear opening.
8. I apply elbow grease if I want to put in extra effort

Answer: Olecranon

The elbow is made up of three bones; the distal humerus (hinge), radial head and olecranon. Olecranon is the bony prominence of the elbow which juts out if the arm is flexed.
9. I can be found on the outside of my eye where my upper and lower eyelids meet

Answer: Canthus

The inside corner of the eye is called the lacrimal caruncle, whereas the outer corner is called the canthus, or canthi (plural). It is where the upper and lower eyelids meet together. Most people wake up in the morning to find rheum, a natural mucus dried at the corner of their eye.
10. I was born with a cute little birthmark where no-one can see!

Answer: Nevus

Another name for a natural birthmark or beauty spot is called a nevus, or naevus. They are most commonly brown or black (pigmented birthmark) or red, purple or pink (vascular birthmark). The latter are frequently called strawberry marks.
