Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the Therizinosaurids live?

Answer: Cretaceous

The Therizinosaurids all lived during the Cretaceous period, from the middle of the Early Cretaceous up to the end of the Late Cretaceous.
2. How long were the claws of Therizinosaurus?

Answer: one metre

At one metre long, the claws of Therizinosaurus are the longest of any known animal.
3. Which of these is most likely to have been the diet of Therizinosaurids?

Answer: vegetation

There's a lot of debate on what Therizinosaurids ate. Despite being classed as Theropods (the group to which all carnivorous dinosaurs belonged), many palaeontologists believe Therizinosaurids were herbivores, using their claws to rip branches from trees. Nobody knows for sure, though and there's also been a suggestion that the claws were used for tearing into the nests of ants or termites.
4. How many known species of Therizinosaurids have been identified at the beginning of the twenty-first century?

Answer: eleven

There are eleven known Therizinosaurids: Segnosaurus, Nothronychus, Beipiaosaurus, Neimongosaurus, Therizinosaurus, Enigmosaurus, Alxasaurus, Suzhousaurus, Erlianosaurus, Nanshiungosaurus and Erlikosaurus.
5. What does the name Therizinosaurus mean?

Answer: scythe lizard

A scythe is a type of hand-held implement with a large, curved blade, which is used for cutting grass.

Therizinosaurus was named by Russian palaeontologist, Evgeny Maleev, in 1954. Its name comes from the Greek words 'therizo' meaning "rake" or "cut" and 'sauros' meaning "lizard".

Segnosaurus means "slow lizard", Nothronychus means "sloth claw" and Neimongosaurus means "Lizard from Nei Mongol".
6. Therizinosaurids had feathers.

Answer: True

Some beautifully preserved Therizinosaurid fossils from China have shown that these dinosaurs had feathers, which were probably used for display.
7. When the fossils of Therizinosaurus were first discovered, they were mistakenly thought to have belonged to which marine animal?

Answer: turtle

Therizinosaurus was first discovered in 1948, during a joint Soviet-Mongolian expedition to the Nemegt Formation in south-western Mongolia. The bones were originally thought to have belonged to a giant turtle, hence the species name T. cheloniformis - "turtle-formed".
8. How did Therizinosaurids reproduce?

Answer: They laid hard-shelled eggs on land

It's widely accepted that all dinosaurs laid hard-shelled eggs. In Mongolia, in 2011, palaeontologists discovered a nesting site filled with a total of seventy-five eggs. It's thought the eggs may belong to Therizinosaurus, but we'll probably never know as the eggs don't contain embryos.
9. Where was the most complete Therizinosaurid fossil discovered?

Answer: USA

Discovered by Merle Graffam in Utah, USA, in 2000, the skeleton of Nothronychus consists of hips, tail and ribs as well as parts of the neck, arms, legs and feet. So far, no complete Therizinosaurid skulls have been found.
10. On which continent have the most Therizinosaurids been found?

Answer: Asia

Nothronychus is the only Therizinosaurid to be discovered in North America.

Therizinosaurids discovered in Mongolia: Enigmosaurus, Erlianosaurus, Erlikosaurus, Segnosaurus, Alxasaurus and Therizinosaurus.

Therizinosaurids discovered in China: Nanshiungosaurus, Neimongosaurus, Suzhousaurus and Beipiaosaurus.
