Schalke is the suburb of Gelsenkirchen in which the club was founded.
Gelsenkirchen is located in the Ruhr Valley, Germany's industrial centre, in the state of Northrhine-Westphalia. There are approx. 300,000 people living in Gelsenkirchen.

Answer: 1934

Schalke were German champions in 1934, 1935, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1942 and 1958, which were all pre-Bundesligaa.

In those early stages of European football leagues, the pay was so low that no player was able to live from just playing football. Therefore, they all had a job besides being a footballer.

When the team was founded under the name Westphalia Schalke in 1904, its colours were red and yellow. Twenty years later, the name was changed to FC Schalke 04, and the colours blue and white were adopted. Schalke's manager Rudi Assauer dropped the cup from the wagon on which they were standing. After this accident, the cup looked really crooked, and a new one had to be manufactured.

Since the early 1980s, the fans of Schalke 04 and FC Nuremberg have been part of this unique friendship.
