5. When was the Merkle 'boner' game?

Answer: September 23rd

On September 23rd, 1908, the Cubs played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in a crucial late season game. With runners on first and third, two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the score tied at one, the batter hit a single to center that brought in the apparent game-winning run.

However, the runner on first, Fred Merkle, headed straight for the clubhouse after the hit without touching second base. He was forced out at second, and the game was called a tie. When the game was replayed the Cubs won.

They finished the season one game ahead of the Giants and Pittsburg. The Merkle 'boner' game was a important and famous game in 1908.

Answer: 99

The 99 wins include the one-game playoff with the Giants. The Cubs won 116 games in 1906, the most ever, but lost to the White Sox in the World Series. To the end of the 20th century, the only other time the Cubs have won 100 or more games was in 1935.
