Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player had the most home runs in a season without leading his league?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

"Slammin'" Sammy of the Cubs had the misfortune to hit 66 dingers in 1998, the same year that the Cards' Mark McGwire topped everyone with 70. Ironically, Sosa hit another 63 in 1999, only to finish 2nd again to Big Mac, who smacked 65.
2. Which player knocked in the most runs without leading his league?

Answer: Chuck Klein

In 1930, Chuck Klein of the Phillies had 170 RBIs. Unfortunately, 1930 was also the year that Hack Wilson of the Cubs knocked in a major-league record 191 RBI.
3. Who has had the highest batting average and not win the batting title?

Answer: Joe Jackson

"Shoeless Joe" Jackson hit at amazing .408 clip for the 1911 Cleveland Naps (they weren't known as the Indians until the 1915 season), but was out-distanced by the Georgia Peach, Ty Cobb, when the Detroit Tigers' outfielder paced the American League with a .420 BA.
4. Who had the most doubles, yet was the runner-up in the league at the end of the season?

Answer: Billy Herman

The Cubs' 2nd baseman, appropriately enough, had 57 two-baggers in 1936, yet finished 7 back of the Cards' Joe "Ducky" Medwick's 64.
5. In the 20th Century, which hitter hit the most triples in a season without leading his league?

Answer: Ty Cobb

One year after beating out Jackson for the batting title, Cobb found himself second in triples to Jackson, hitting 23 to Jackson's 26.
6. Who had the most total bases without finishing in the top spot in a season?

Answer: Hack Wilson

While Wilson outpaced Chuck Klein in RBIs in 1930, it was Klein who topped Wilson that year in total bases, 445 to 423.
7. Who had the most stolen bases in a season without leading his league?

Answer: Omar Moreno

Pittsburgh's centerfielder Moreno stole an amazing 96 bases in 1980. However, 1980 also happened to be the year that Ron LeFlore joined the Montreal Expos and led the NL with 97 swipes.
8. Who had the most hits in a season without leading his league?

Answer: Chuck Klein

It was 1930, where Klein found himself in second once again. This time, however, it wasn't Hack Wilson who out-hit him. The New York Giants' Bill Terry rapped out 254 hits, besting Klein by four.
9. Who scored the most runs, yet not lead his league in that season?

Answer: Kiki Cuyler

1930 saw Hack Wilson's Cubs teammate finish second in runs scored to Chuck Klein, 158 to 155. As great a season as Klein had that year (.386 BA, 40 HR, 170 RBI), one would think that the Phillies would have ridden his coattails to the World Series. Unfortunately, Klein's teammates on the mound weren't as amazing, as the Phillies finished in last place at 52-102, 40 games behind the pennant-winning Cardinals.

The Cubs, with Wilson and Cuyler, fared better, finishing in second place, 2 games back of St. Louis.
10. Name the player who hit for the highest slugging percentage without leading the league?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

As a member of the New York Yankees "Murderer's Row" of 1927, The Iron Horse finished a close second to teammate Babe Ruth, .772 to .765.
